Senior Card Group
The Senior Citizens card group met on April 17 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.
Three games of Sheepshead were played. Aaron Totzke won first place and Butch Boris came in second in the first game. Henry Faber won first and Sally Stubbe came in second in the second game. Steve Klockziem won first place and Wil Stubbe came in second in the third game.
Low score was Andy Hoef. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
Maple Grove School
The March 10 meeting of the Maple Grove Governance Board was called to order by Kelly H at 5:30 p.m.
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Roll call was taken and all members were present.
Minutes of the February meeting and the article for the Record Review were approved.
A shout-out was given to the PTO by principal Robin Hanson for the gift of the shirts for all staff members.
Charter contract changes continue to be reviewed and will be voted on at the April meeting.
A grant update was given. Playground construction will start at the beginning of May. The board was shown pictures that look very impressive.
The Charter School Summit will be in Oshkosh and Kelly H will attend.
The grant budget was looked at and discussed.
Whole Child Learning was discussed. Goals in different areas were explained, and Hanson met with CESA and then had a discussion with the staff. When the grant is done, she will be coaching for the staff.
Fox dens are now meeting every other week and the students have the ability to talk about anything. Fox dens will be tried at lunch and recess. This is for all grades K-5. Paras are getting training for small groups. Savers want more support for teachers and students. Teachers would like more training for faceto- face support. Rubric training was held on April 16. Math observation is being done, and this will be worked on more next year.
The ad on the radio has started and the numbers are comparable to last year.
A marketing video has been started to capture the tapping of the trees. DH Creations is the company, and they will be doing more interviews in the coming months.
Governance board recruitment is under way. Four members' terms are up, and two of them will not be reapplying. Those interested are asked to contact the school. It's a great way to be involved in the community.
The principal's report was given by Hanson. Parent-teacher conferences had a great turnout. Next year they will be in February.
Tree tapping is done. The school had great volunteer participation. March 13 was the open house and the pancake breakfast was March 30.
Online applications are open. A local spelling bee was held in the classrooms and then a whole school one was done on March 12.
The superintendent's report was given by Andrea Sheridan, who talked about open enrollment and all the work it involves. She gave a shout-out to Becky Bliven for all of her hard work.
The school budget is at 44.4% for the year.
FOMG budget was reviewed. A motion was made by Dawn and seconded by Rebecca to approve.
A PTO update was given. The pizza fry fundraiser went well. Meals were provided for the teachers during conferences.
End-of-year activities are being planned.
The foundation reminded all that they are still selling Kwik Trip cards, doing popcorn and continuing to look for financial partners.

Family Story Time
Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to the Athens Branch Library for a 30minute Family Story Time. Library staff will read books, sing songs, and offer other literature-based activities. Family Story Times will be held every Wednesday in April, from 10:30 to 11 a.m.
Fiber arts meet-up
Adults are invited to craft and chat at a monthly fiber artists meetup on Monday, April 28, from 4-6 p.m. at the Edgar Branch Library. Whether it’s knitting, crocheting, embroidery or mending, everyone is welcome to bring their projects and chat. Maybe you'll learn some tips or tricks or even make new friends. Elizabeth Dzwonkowski was named to the 2024 fall semester dean’s list at UW-Stout in Menomonie. The award is presented to students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Legion Auxiliary
President Betty Blume called the April 10 meeting of American Legion Auxiliary Alois Dreikosen Unit 469 to order. Opening meeting protocol was followed. The opening prayer was said, and the minutes from the March meeting and the treasurer’s report were given.
Committee reports
Membership: The unit has 95 members, new or renewed for 2025. March and April birthdays were read. The group is still gathering emails from members.
Sick list and Juniors: No new information to report.
Old business
At the time of this press release, the April Honor Flight had left and returned on April 14. One more Honor Flight is scheduled for May.
Poppy Day will be Friday, May 23 this year. Auxiliary members will be out and about in the community distributing poppies. Please wear a poppy to show support for our veterans.
The unit will be sending two girls to Badger Girls State this summer. This is a unique opportunity for young people to get a better understanding of how our government works.
The unit is continuing plans for the Patriotic Art Fair to be held this summer. All age groups are encouraged to participate using the art form of their choice. Projects are limited to a 20”x20” size and should represent what patriotism means to you. Projects may be dropped off on May 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Heritage Center.
The closing prayer was given by the chaplain. The next regular meeting will be Thursday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the village hall. Members are asked to contact Betty Blume or Kathy Grell if they would like to receive a complete copy of the minutes via email.
Spring cleanup
The Village of Marathon City will be conducting a spring cleanup for its residents on Saturday, May 3. This will be held at the municipal garage located at 104 Chestnut Street from 8 to 10 a.m. Information regarding fees and what is accepted can be found on the Marathon City website.

Health insurance 101
The Stratford Branch Library will hold a free presentation on understanding health insurance benefits on Thursday, April 24, from 4-5 p.m. This presentation will be led by a local life and health insurance agent who will walk through samples of health insurance claims, discussing how to understand them, how to tell if they went through insurance, and what actually needs to be paid. Like all library programs, this one is noncommercial in nature and for informational purposes only. This event is free and open to the public, no registration is required. Thank-you cards
Community members of all ages can create cards that will be delivered to veterans on their Honor Flight home this spring. Cardmaking will take place at the Stratford Branch Library on Tuesday, April 29, from 3-6 p.m. The Honor Flight needs thank-you cards to be handed out to vets on their return flight home from Washington D.C. this spring. Local folks can show their support by making cards and letters during this drop-in event.
