THURSDAY, JULY 3, 1974

Fire Destroys Barn

Fire destroyed the barn on the Richard Berens farm, on Route One, Stratford, the former John Kroening farm. The call for help came to the Stratford Fire Department at 10:30 Tuesday evening.

The Berens only recently moved on to the farm, and there was no livestock in the barn. It is believed that electrical problems started the fire. Two Marathon Girls Enlist in Army Corp

Cheryl Mulbeck and Peggy Kaisershot, both of Marathon, were sworn into the Women’s Army Corps at the armed forces examining and entrance station, Milwaukee.

Mulbeck will go on active duty 270 days after enlisting. She will serve three years and will be trained as an intelligence analyst. Kaisershot enlisted for four years with her advanced training in Russian language. Both women are graduates of Marathon High School.

Summer School Students Take Trip

Stratford summer school students from grades 1 through 6 went on an educational tour to Wausau. They went to the courthouse in Wausau and were met and welcomed by Mr. Ott, county clerk of Marathon County. The students toured the courthouse building, sat in on traffic court cases, and toured the county jail. The students ate their dinner at McDonald’s in Schofield. STRATFORD J OURNAL 25 YEARS AGO...

Pop Warner donate

The Stratford Pop Warner football program recently received a grant from NFL charities. The board decided to become the major contributor towards the new sound system at Tiger Field. Don Spindler, Pop Warner representative, presented the $850 check to the Stratford School Board at their June 28 meeting.

Fair kick-off held Friday at Athens

Athens Fair board members and their wives, queen candidates and their parents along with Assemblyman and Mrs. Lawrence Day gathered Friday night at the Skylite to “get the ball rolling” for the Athens Fair on August 15-18.

Queen candidates this year are Sherri Rininger and Cheryl Zocher.

Share Honors

Wirkus IGA and the Edgar Coop shared first place honors for floats in the annual Edgar Homecoming parade Sunday afternoon. Schueller Company’s float won second prize in the annual parade. The Wien Wildcats captured third place with their Butter Capital float. The Wildcats have been participating in an extensive campaign to promote dairy products during June Dairy Month.

Disaster Training

Marathon County tested its disaster preparedness Thursday of last week when a simulated disaster happened at the Central Wisconsin airport. Ambulance crews from the entire area, including Edgar, Hamburg and Stratford took part in the mock accident. Ambulances answered the call and helped assist 175 “victims” of the airplane crash just west of the airport off old Highway 51.

Edgar Fire Department responds

A bolt of lightening started on fire a vacant barn in the Town of Wien. The Edgar firemen responded to the Gary Ludwig farm, Fairview Rd. and were able to put out a small fire in the eave of the older wooden barn.

The Edgar Fire Department also extinguished a silo fire at the Leonard Lechleitner farm CTH U, Town of Rietbrock. Firemen used two applications of high expansion foam to cap smoldering silage in the silo and put out the fire.

1999 – “Toilet Bowl Champs”

Athens girls basketball players took first place in this year’s “Toilet Bowl” at the Gus Macker Three on Three tournament held in Wausau, June 19 and 20. Pictured team members are Jackie Steen, Mandy Ellenbecker, Ana Ely and Tanille Zenner.
