THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 1974 Firemen Entertain Happy Crowd Over Weekend

Good weather and fine attractions brought out good crowds last weekend in Stratford. Perhaps the crowds would have been larger had not so many farmers been busy making hay, but the attendance was very satisfactory to the Firemen of Stratford who promoted the days.

Farm Progress Days is a Big Undertaking Tent City will be the center of activity for the thousands of farmers visiting 1974 Wisconsin Farm Progress Days. Over 250 exhibitors have contracted for 540 lots which makes this the largest Farm Progress Days ever.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30, 1999 Tractor Purchased

The Stratford School Board voted Monday night to purchase a John Deere tractor for $24,021 for snow removal and other tasks. The district’s current tractor is approximately 20 years old and brings a trade-in value of $3,200. THE MARATHON J OURNAL 50 YEARS AGO...

THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 1974 Cindy Goldbach to Represent Wisconsin

Miss Cindy Goldbach of Marathon will represent Wisconsin in the national Miss Majorette of America pageant at the University of Notre Dame on July 31 through August 3. Goldbach has been practicing majorette art since she was three years old. Dodgers Top Mets in Big Slugfest 34-1

The Dodgers beat the Mets 34 to 16 in Marathon Little League play. Kevin Mroczenski pitched five innings and Bruce Borchard pitched two innings for the winners. Jeff Menzner took the loss for the Mets. Leading hitters for the Mets were Pete Kage and Brian Koeller with 3 for 4. Jeff Oelke led the Dodgers with 6 for 6.

THURSDAY, JUNE 27, 1974 Early Morning Fire

A fire believed to have been started by a television set, destroyed a 14 x 70 foot mobile home parked at Holiday Courts, Athens, about 12:30 Saturday morning. The mobile home, owned by Holiday Courts was rented by LaVonne Williamson. Mrs. Williamson and her daughter, Amanda, were at home but were not injured after being alerted by their dog, Mutt-Mutt. The trailer and its contents were destroyed.

Welcomes Dentist

Marathon has a new dentist. His name is Dr. Mark Meacham who graduated in May from the University of Marquette. He and his wife, Margaret, are originally from Melrose and have two daughters, Nicole, age four, and Noelle, three. He’s an Army veteran, having served in Viet Nam. The family is now living in Marathon and Dr. Meacham has his office on Main Street.

Word Maze Winners

Marathon County Dairy Princess Geraldine Prahl presented certificates to winners of the Wien Wildcats Word Maze contest on Friday at the Bank of Edgar. Winners were Nancy Pilgrim, Dawn Wirkus, Kim, Kay and Bobby Bonsall. Winners received certificates good for ice cream sundaes at the Edgar Drug Store.

The June Dairy Month Word Maze was prepared and judged by Barbara Hackel, junior leader of the Wien Wildcats 4-H Club.

25 YEARS AGO...

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30, 1999 Athens school options proposed

Athens residents were called on to study four options at various price ranges and be ready to give referendum advice to the Athens Board of Education at their July meeting. District administrator Mark Smits said that the district’s “critical needs” were that the aging elementary school and 1960’s vintage high school were chronically short of space.

1999 – Good sized crowd

Consultant Don Ladd reviews “the rules” for public participation at Monday night’s meeting to discuss Athens School District building needs. Over 70 Athens residents showed up at Monday’s session to tour Athens Elementary School and to discuss district building options.

1999 - Marathon soccer team

Soccer is fast becoming a popular sport in our area and these little leaguers, ages 5, 6 and 7, are off to a running start playing on a team from Marathon in the Athens Area Soccer League. The league was started in 1998 and has teams from Athens and Edgar participating. League games are played on Thursday evenings in Athens. The team is coached by Yvonne Mroczenski and Laurie Fitzsimmons.
