Medford Police Chief Ken Coyer said concern over a disgruntled visitor to the Taylor County law enforcement centre prompted calls to area schools Monday afternoon. While no direct threats were made in the conversation, police were worried about the demeanor of the man and they were unsure of his immediate path after leaving the courthouse area. The police department contracted the Medford Area Middle School and Immanuel Lutheran School to share the concern and the schools took appropriate steps.

March 17, 1999 Pay raise for City Council is not in the cards, Finance Committee says

Saying they felt $40 per meeting is “fair,” members of the Medford Common Council’s Finance/Personnel Committee last week voted to table any action on a salary increase for Council members.

The committee had been asked to review the Council’s wage structure by Mayor Fred Schroeder, who had said he felt Medford alderman were at the “low end” of the pay scale compared to Council members in other cities.

March 14, 1974 Robert Rusch heads cancer crusade; $3,550 quota set 50 Years Ago Robert Rusch, Taylor County District Attorney, has accepted the chairmanship of the 1974 American Cancer Society crusade in the county during the month of April. The campaign quota has been set at $3,550.

Proceeds from the crusade will go toward research of cases and cures of cancer, service to cancer patients and public education about early detection of the disease.

75 Years Ago March 17, 1949 City Council Orders Trial Parking Plan

A new parking plan for the trucks transporting milk to the Medford Cooperative Creamery was ordered on a trial basis by the city council during a special meeting Monday evening. The plan will go into effect on April 1, and will be for a period of one month. If it proves satisfactory during that time an ordinance will be passed making it a law of the city.

Beginning April 1, all trucks delivering to the south intake will park on Perkins street and Wisconsin avenue, using the south and east sides of the roadway so as to be on the right side of the road. Trucks delivering to the north intake will park on the west side of Wisconsin avenue so they too will be on the right side of the road. Center of the street parking will be eliminated.

100 Years Ago March 13, 1924 37 Head Horses Sold Saturday for $4812

Thirty seven head of horses from Grinnel, Iowa, horse breeders were sold at the Henry Hierlmeier barn in Medford Saturday for $4812. Only about $1375 of this amount was in notes, over $3400 being paid cash.

The horses brought an average of $130.03. The average was brought down by three animals which sold for only $38, $41, and $71. The highest paid for one horse was $190, and the highest for a team $360.
