The Highground Veterans Memorial Park in Neillsville is excited to announce that the spring Vets & Guitars courses are open for registration. The Highground is doing something different this year by offering both beginning and continuing acoustic guitar classes. The courses are free for veterans, and The Highground will supply instruments and basic necessary supplies. Both sessions will begin on March 21 at The Highground. The beginner’s guitar class will start at 4:30 p.m. and the continuing guitar course will begin at 6 p.m. These 10-session courses are scheduled to meet weekly on Thursday evenings.

Music can be a powerful tool in bringing joy to one’s life. Music can promote wellbeing and reduce stress, anxiety and depression.

“The Highground’s Vets & Guitars course is an enjoyable way for veterans to learn a lifelong artistic skill in the company of fellow veterans,” wrote Liz Hamilton of The Highground in a press release.

All courses will be taught by local musician Victoria Shoemaker. She has partnered with The Highground to develop this music program for veterans, now in its fourth set of courses. More information about Victoria and her performances with Peter Phippen in their band, Virginia Steel, can be found at virginiasteelmusic.com.

The beginning acoustic guitar course is geared toward veterans who have little to no experience playing acoustic guitar as well as those who have not played in several years and would like to refresh their skills. The continuing acoustic guitar course is for veterans who have completed the beginning guitar course.

This program is made possible by the support and generosity of others. Major funding for the 2024 Vets & Guitars program has been provided by a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA). Jennifer Tieman and the Willard Well also have provided continued support.

It costs $150 to sponsor a veteran for this program. If you would like to help cover the cost for a veteran to participate in Vets & Guitars, contact Theresa Hebert (details below).

To register for one of the acoustic guitar courses, or for more information, email Hebert at museum@thehighground. org or call 715-743-4224. The Highground is at W7031 Ridge Road, Neillsville.

The veterans are ready and excited to begin their first session of the fall 2023 Vets & Guitars course.
