Wisconsin Shakespeare Festival announces New Works Playwright Winners

Wisconsin Shakespeare Festival is thrilled to introduce the playwright winners for Improbable Fiction: A New Works Series. Playwrights from across the region and country were invited to submit one-act plays in one of three categories: “Young Voices” (for writers ages 1624), “Diverse Perspectives (for writers who identify as LGBTQIA+), or “Shakes-pired” (for works inspired by or an homage to Shakespeare and his plays).

After reviewing over 170 submissions, the festival is pleased to announce the three selected playwrights and their works: “Young Voices” awardee Anthony Roytman (IL) with Filthy Animals, in which nature finally loses patience with its peskiest species and unleashes a furious lesson on who really owns the planet – “Diverse Perspectives” awardee Carolyn Gage (ME) with Female Nude Seated, where two young artists meet and forever alter their lives through revolution – and “Shakes-pired” awardee Mark Evan Chimsky (ME) with The Secret Muse, in which three historical figures set the record straight on what happened over 425 years ago.

Each playwright will be awarded an honorarium for their work, receive a year’s membership to The Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis, and have their selected work workshopped by a creative team and brought to the stage in late July.

Actors will join teams including the playwright, a director, a dramaturg, and a stage manager as they workshop and produce the plays to be performed as part of the world premiere Improbable Fiction performances on July 24 at 7:30PM in the Jamf Theatre at Pablo Center. For more information, visit the Pablo Center’s website or email the Festival at wsf@pablocenter.org.
