Additional charges have been filed in Winnebago County against a Taylor County Man accused of murdering his roommate in a care facility in the town of Aurora.

Cory C. Carlson, 37, of Medford is being held in Taylor County Jail on a $200,000 cash bond for the murder of Joseph B. Bonney, 61. The two men were roommates at Almost Home Again, a mental health and AODA treatment facility located at N3531 Elder Dr in the town of Aurora. Bonney was found dead in his bed at the facility on January 14. Autopsy results indicated Bonney’s injuries were consistent with asphyxiation related to strangulation.

Carlson was charged with first degree intentional homicide, this is a class A felony and if convicted Carlson faces life in prison. He was also charged with strangulation and suffocation, a class H felony, and if found guilty could face up to $10,000 in fines and up to six years in prison.

On January 30, Carlson was formally charged in Winnebago County for additional counts of strangulation and suffocation, a class H felony, and if found guilty could face up to $10,000 in fines and up to six years in prison. He was also charged with disorderly conduct as a class B misdemeanor.

He will have his initial appearance to answer to those charges in Winnebago County Circuit Court on Monday, February 19 at 8:45 a.m.

The incident prompting the second charge occurred when Carlson had been transported to Winnebago Mental Health Institute in Oshkosh following the alleged homicide in Taylor County. Carlson was returned to the Taylor County Jail on January 25.
