Marathon journal 50 years ago... thursday, January 17, 1974 MHS to Hold Winter Carnival For a Week The Marathon high school will attempt something new this year by trying a winter carnival week. There are many sports activities which will be taking place this week, but the climax will come with a basketball game with the Auburndale Apaches. A dance follows the game in the cafeteria with the Bushman-Clark Orchestra furnishing the music.

Classes will build snow sculptures on the school lawn. In addition to the snow sculptures, each class will have an assignment to decorate a section of wall in thegymnasium for the week’s activities. John Hirvela reported to the board that because of Daylight Savings Time several surrounding school districts, who had been starting class at 8 in the morning, had changed to an 8:30 starting time. The problem of morning darkness will only be a problem for the next four or five weeks. 25 years ago...

Wednesday, January 20, 1999 Cheese firm decides against Edgar A Whitehall Specialties, Inc. official told the Village of Edgar that the company will not, in at least the immediate future, start up processed cheese manufacturing in the old ConAgra beef slaughterhouse as had been hoped.

The disappointing news, according to Village of Edgar administrator Dennis Weix, means that village utility customers should brace for a 53% increase in their bills over the course of the next two years.

Straford Journal 50 years ago... thursday, January 17, 1974 Tiger Girls Defeat Red Raiders The new year has brought female competition to Stratford. Mrs. Victoria Dankmeyer, head coach of the Stratford WIAA girls’ basketball team, announces the following members: Zadra Meyer, the team’s only senior; juniors Mary Kirsch, Debbie Aldrich, Cheryl Ulrich, Pam Brown; sophomores Linda Drexler, Cindy Telschow, Cindy Ponczoch, Jenny Meyer, Debbie Zuelke, Lori Ulrich and Penny Wiesman, and freshman Jean Spindler. Their first home game was with Marathon and the Stratford varisty defeated them 34 to 31. 25 years ago... wednesday, January 20, 1999 Village of Stratford to Purchase Property The Stratford Village Board approved the purchase of 115 acres adjacent to the current Business/Industrial Park on a fiveyear option.

The Waller property will cost the village $100,000. The village, on a five-year option, will pay $10,000 now and $90,000 in five years. For the next five years, the Wallers will continue to own the land, pay taxes on the land and receive rent payments on the land.

The current Business/Industrial Park houses eight businesses including Polster Electric, Marshfield Clinic, A& B Processes, Omega, FALCO, Wausau Metals, Foxlandand Stratford Sign Company. The Record-Review Wednesday, January 20, 1999 Marathon School District enrollment is holding steady from last year, administrator Gary Adams reported. Adams said that the second Friday count was 731, three less than last year.

In other business, four candidates for two school board seats in the upcoming spring election were named. They are incumbent Connie Ruplinger, Beth Seubert, Linda Carlson and Ken Dirks.
