The Taylor County personnel committee accepted the recommendation of its wage consultant last week and dropped jailers and dispatchers from the protective occupation category for retirement contribution rates. For the 18 full-time and three parttime employees, the move will cost them 3.1 percent of the employer contribution to the Wisconsin retirement system, and increase the minimum retirement age from 50 to 55 years old, while cutting duty disability benefits. Protective occupation status is also needed to be classifi ed as a public safety employee for the purposes of collective bargaining under Act 10.
December 2, 1998 County offers Breneman job as deputy sheriff 25 Years Ago
Sheriff Bill Breneman, who was defeated earlier this fall in his bid for re-election will apparently be allowed to “return to the ranks” as a deputy sheriff.
The County’s Law Enforcement and Personnel committees met in closed session Monday to decide Breneman’s fate, and according to County Personnel Director Jim Arkens it was voted unanimously to offer Breneman a position as deputy sheriff with his benefits set at the 10-year rate.
50 Years Ago November 29, 1973 Weather Shield Buys Ladysmith Millwork Plan
Weather Shield Manufacturing, Inc., Medford, has announced the purchase of the property in Ladysmith formerly owned by Great Lakes Millwork Corp. The Ladysmith division of the local manufacturing corporation will be known as Great Lakes Mfg., a division of Weather Shield Mfg., Inc.
The acquisition of Great Lakes millwork will give Weather Shield access to an additional 70,000 square feet of floor space.
75 Years Ago December 2, 1948 Lower tax rate approved by council
A tax rate of $4.20 per $100 of assessed property valuation was approved Tuesday evening by the Medford city council at a meeting which was attended by all members. The rate is a reduction of 30 cents per hundred over that for 1948.
No one appeared to discuss the budget, but the council members reviewed the figures and briefly discussed the school tax, which shows a marked increase over the 1948 figure.
Taxes must provide $169,057.77 for the city’s operation.
December 6, 1923 Fire inspector well pleased with Medford 100 Years Ago
Ralph Ord of Madison, deputy on fire prevention for the Industrial Commission of Wisconsin, made Medford an official visit on Tuesday.
In general Mr. Ord was well pleased with the efforts toward fire prevention being made in Medford, and he spoke well of the fire inspection work which Fred Davis is doing in cooperation with Fire Chief Glen Austin and the city council.

Dr. Miller has purchased the entire stock of lumber piled south of Paquet’s opera hall, the same being the remains of the Hartman failure, which occurred in 1893. The sale was affected by Fred Winthers as agent for the owner, a Milwaukee Gentleman.
