Is that my intuition or a stomach bug?

Have you ever gotten that feeling in the pit of your stomach, whether it’s good or bad, that is hard to ignore? Or do you find that you are second guessing yourself in that moment and later on you have regrets of your actions or even lack there of? Maybe you could be feeling a continuous cycle that you are trying to break free from, after continuously making the wrong choice, so the cycle then keeps repeating. Over and over.

Throughout my years on this earth I have read countless books and articles on intuition. What I find is that it is a consistency that throughout your time here on Earth, unless you stay in touch with your own self and have a strong inner Knowing of yourself, our connection to our intuition becomes muddled and/or distorted. But, not in the way of it being completely “wrong.” What I am referring to is that your interpretation might be perceiving and reading yourself “wrong” and therefore our decision-making becomes more complicated and the feeling of overwhelm is insufferable and one no longer one wants to make choices. Feelings of being stuck and complacency is where one resides. How can one figure out how to work with their intuition to make decisions and make life less stressful?

Let us first tackle the opinion of mine; that is when we are young our intuition is very accurate and innate but then as we age, our intuition gets muddled through traumas, societal criteria to live by and even daily living of technology and algorithms telling you what you “want” and “need.” If we think about it in the realm of evolution of mankind, our intuition was widely used to keep us out of danger instinctively. A time when mankind lived in caves, with more simple tools they could only produce with their hands. They not only relied on those but also with their intuition. Their inner Knowing. Their inner melding of both sides of the hemisphere of their brain. So, how did we get to a place in our world with people who don’t know how to follow our innate-born ability of intuition?

My thoughts are similar to those of others, in that over time and structures of cities and getting further involved with a materialistic world, enduring traumas that shut off parts of communication between the two brain hemispheres and pulling away from yourself (even if you don’t know it) can and will make it difficult to perceive your intuition accurately.

As I stated before, there are countless books and articles on how to connect to your inner Knowing, your intuition. But how to reach it? Some of you might be able to guess what I am about to say, meditation. Aha!

I understand that meditation, while people hearing the benefits of it, say that it is just “too hard,” or “my mind is way to active,” or “I can’t sit still for that long,” the list goes on and on. All of those are honest and common misconceptions. I understand that for some the process is daunting and harder, but the actual results will be so worth it. That inner feeling of a strong “yes” or “no” will not only be handy to have, but actually a truer way of living your life. Sure you will still have trials and hard times to get through, but your intuition will be more available for you to listen or sync up with.

When you try meditating (again), do one thing for me. Get out of your own way. What do I mean by that? Well, your brain never stops you say. Why are you trying so hard to stop it? Mediation isn’t about having your brain stop thinking thoughts. It is a practice that allows the thoughts to go by and you sit in a somewhat removed space inside, where emotions don’t rule the show but are evenly understood. The side of you that keeps getting distracted and “pulls you out” of your inner space is the left hemisphere. It is trying to analyze and objectively observe so it may formulate an understanding of the process of inner Knowing.

When you start to feel the frustration take a hold, notice it for what it is and release it. Breathe it out. Focus on your breathe and please make sure you are in a space where NOTHING can distract you, i.e. cats, dogs, children, music with words, others talking, other noisy things. Really focus on the sound of your breath as you breathe out, and then back in. Do that for a bit, just focusing on your breath. Even that little bit is honoring yourself and realigning your inner Knowing, or intuition. Taking little chunks out of your day to do that little mindfulness exercise when you get frustrations will bring you closer to longer moments of meditation. Stay consistent and maybe you will realize that your intuition, your gut feeling, is feeling more certain and trustworthy to follow.
