Edgar’s varsity football team on Friday pounded the football on the ground with senior Karter Butt en route to a 20-0 home WIAA Level 2 win against Eau Claire Regis.

The Wildcats held a considerable 228 to nine advantage in rushing yards compared to the Ramblers. This was quite a turnaround compared to last season when Regis held a dominating 378 to 117 advantage in rushing yards over Edgar in the Ramblers’ 53-8 WIAA Level 3 win at Carson Park in Eau Claire.

Butt was Edgar’s leading rusher in last season’s playoff loss to Regis with 96 yards and a touchdown. He took out his frustration from that loss on Friday night by rushing for 153 yards and three touchdowns. He ran roughshod against Regis’ defense. Butt scored on a oneyard touchdown plunge to give Edgar a 6-0 lead in the opening quarter. He ran for a four-yard touchdown in the third quarter and a 23-yard touchdown in the final quarter. He also ran in the twopoint conversion after his last score.

Ninth straight shutout

Edgar’s defense, meanwhile, shut out its ninth straight opponent this season. The Wildcats have outscored their 10 opponents, 391 to 14, this year. This type of tremendous defensive play has Edgar veteran head coach Jerry Sinz pleased on the sidelines this season.

“Jase Apfelbeck led us on defense with 22 defensive points,” he said about Friday night’s defensive performance against Regis. “Brett Baumgartner, Kohlbe Weisenberger, Lucas Stahnke and Preston Dahlke also had big games for us. We held Regis to only nine yards rushing in the game.”

Junior Leyton Schuett and Apfelbeck each had an interception against Regis. Senior Harrison Graveen had four kickoffs for 176 yards which is an average of 44 yards each kick.

Edgar improves its record to 10-1 this season and next plays at 7 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 3, in a road WIAA Level 3 playoff game against undefeated Boyceville. The Bulldogs beat the Spring Valley Cardinals, 30-0, in Friday’s home Level 2 playoff game.

The winner between Edgar and Boyceville will play against the winner of Friday’s other WIAA Level 3 playoff game consisting of undefeated Cashton against Bangor, 10-1, in a showdown between Scenic Bluffs Conference schools. Bangor’s only loss this season was to Cashton, 14-10, on Sept. 22 in Bangor.
