Cornell advances to semis before falling to Panthers
By Ginna Young Coming fresh from the regular season with a conference title under their belt, the Cornell volleyball program was ready to move forward in the playoff bracket.
Oct. 17 vs. Thorp Regional (W 3-1) As the No. 5 seed, Cornell hosted No. 12 Thorp, in what quickly became a battle for the right to advance from the opening Regional game.
It was close, but Cornell pulled out a win in the first set, 25-23, before dropping the second set, 25-21. The third set wasn’t even close, with the Chiefs taking the third set, 25-17.
The fourth set was a different affair, as spectators on both sides were kept on the edge of their seats, as the score went back and forth. Finally, Cornell pulled ahead by a couple serves and the match went to the Chiefs, 30-28.
Leading for Cornell, was senior Brooke Anderson, with 14 kills and 17 digs, followed by junior Briana Glaus, with 11 kills and 10 digs, while senior Brooke Sime had 6 kills and 23 digs. Junior Bralee Schroeder also had 6 kills, along with 32 assists and 23 digs.
Freshman Kylee Hetherington ended with 11 assists and 24 digs, and senior Teryn Close racked up 13 digs.
Oct. 19 vs. Prairie Farm Regional Semi-Final (L 3-1) It was then off to No. 4 Prairie Farm, for Regional semi-final action.
The Chiefs fell behind in the first set, 25-18, but came back to claim the second set, 25-21. The third set also went to Prairie Farm, 25-20, and although they battled back from deficits in the fourth set, the Chiefs watched the set and the game, go to the home team 25-15.
That puts an end to Cornell’s stellar season, with the group of seniors exiting with an undefeated four-year East Lakeland Conference record to their credit.

Energy was high and enthusiasm reigned in Cadott’s gym Oct. 19, as the Hornets hosted Elk Mound in the second Regional playoff game. Spectators played off the energy of the band and the team used the energy from the crowd to pull out a 3-1 win, moving in the bracket to the Regional championship match with Fall Creek.
