Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to the Athens library branch for these 30-minute programs. There will be reading, singing and other literature- based activities on Mondays, October 30, November 6, 13, 20 and 27, 10:30-11 a.m.
Senior Card Group
The Senior Citizens card group met on October 19 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Three games of Sheepshead were played. Tommy Ellenbecker won the first game and Steve Klockziem took second place. Andy Hoef won the second game and Henry Faber took second. Rick Schaetzl won the third game and Pat Frank took second. Butch Boris received low score.
Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
MCPL Book Club
Join Athens library staff and other local readers for a discussion of “Tuck Everlasting,” at 2 p.m. on November 14.

dgar Trunk or Treat
St. John’s Trunk or Treat will be held October 29, 2-3 p.m. The event is open to the community. Attendees are asked to bring a canned good item for the Circle of Joy. Contact Jenna Martin at 715-218-7170 or jennamartin6@ gmail.com with questions or to register a trunk.
MCPL Story Time
Story times for children of all ages and their parents/caregivers will be held on the first and third Tuesday of the month at the Edgar library branch. There will be stories, songs and other literature-based activities during the 30-minute programs on Tuesdays, November 7 and 21, 11-11:30 a.m.
Book and Bake Sale
The Edgar Women’s Club will be hosting its annual Book and Bake Sale on November 3, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., at village hall. Books in good condition may be brought to the community room by November 2.
MCPL Recipe Swap
Adults are invited to a community cookbook and recipe swap event on November 6, 5-6:30 p.m. at the Edgar library branch, 224 S. 3rd Avenue. Recipes will be compiled from the program and made into a community cookbook that will eventually be available for checkout at the library. Those who can’t make it to the event can submit their recipes any time during regular business hours.
Medicare 101
Adults can learn Medicare basics at a program on November 8, 4-5 p.m., at the Edgar library branch. The presentation will be led by a local life and health insurance agent, but is noncommerical in nature and for informational purposes only.
Whitetail Night
Held at Edgar High School, Whitetail Night is a free event for deer hunters the Monday before opening day. It will be held November 13 at 7 p.m. There will be door prizes and raffles available. The topic will be using drones to locate wounded deer, with speakers Kyle Ziembo, DNR warden, and Nick Wayerski with Marshfield Drones.
MCPL Book Club
Head to the Edgar library on November 14, 12 p.m., for next month’s discussion on “All Creatures Great & Small.” New members are always welcome; just read the book and attend the event.
Pokémon Club
The monthly Pokémon Club for upper-elementary and middle school-aged kids will be held on November 20, 4-5 p.m., at the Edgar library branch. The library offers different Pokémon activities each month and the opportunity to play the card game with other kids.

arathon Auxiliary minutes
President Betty Blume called the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 469 meeting to order with 17 members and two guests present on October 12.
Allison Stieber and Andrea Wirkus spoke regarding HOOAH Wisconsin. This organization helps with suicide prevention for veterans. They are looking for financial support for the organization.
Opening meeting protocol was followed.
Opening prayer was given by Chaplain Julie Carriveau.
The minutes of the September meeting were read by Secretary Kathy Grell. Motion to accept the minutes was made by Jean Knauf and seconded by Suzie Lang. Motion carried.
The treasurer’s report was read by Treasurer Edee Zuleger. Motion to accept the treasurer’s report was made by Joanna Grell and seconded by Cassie Lang. Motion carried.

Allison Stieber, U.S. military, and her sister, Andrea Wirkus, U.S. military veteran, presented their story about “Hooah,” a military battle cry, during the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 469’s recent meeting. HOOAH of WI’s mission is to eliminate suicide with a proactive approach to the overall wellness of service members, veterans and their support systems through programs and certified professionals. Hooah proudly supports all branches of the U.S. military.

Juniors: Melanie Rodreguez is planning a day to make holiday cards to be sent to local veterans as well as various veterans homes throughout the state. A suggestion made to partner with the American Legion to have cards for each veteran when cookie tins are delivered for Christmas cheer. Melanie is checking into a location for this event where materials will be available for use. A motion was made by Haley Cramer and seconded by Karie Koppa to pay for materials to make cards. Motion carried.
A thank you card was read from Wreaths Across America. Wreath laying will take place on December 16 starting at 10 a.m. with a ceremony at 11 a.m.
The District Fall meeting will be held at Mid State Technical College in Wisconsin Rapids on October 28. Registration starts at 8 a.m. Opening sessions start at 9 a.m. A luncheon is provided. Conference ends mid-afternoon.
The County Fall meeting will be held at the Village Hall in Rothschild on October 29, starting at 1 p.m.
Old Business A motion was made to donate to HOOAH Wisconsin by Nicole Myszka and seconded by Suzie Lang. Motion carried.
New Business A motion was made by Peggy Lemanski and seconded by Mary Jane Cramer to donate to Support our Troops Care Packages. Motion carried.
The Rib Falls 4-H Ramblers are sponsoring a breakfast on Veterans Day, November 11, from 6:30-11 a.m. A motion was made by Suzie Lang and seconded by Jeneese Karlen to contribute toward a goodie bag for each veteran. The 4-H group is also looking for auxiliary members who would be willing to assist that day.
The Legion will be presenting a program to the schools on November 9 for Veterans Day. A motion was made by Haley Cramer and seconded by Suzie Lang to get lapel flag pins for each student and staff member to wear on Veterans Day. Motion carried.
The Americanism Essay contest is again being held this year. Suzie Lang will bring the information to the teachers at St. Mary’s to promote the essay.
Kathy Grell will check with MVA staff/principal to determine if they would have time for the essay.
Joanna Grell also suggested using the same theme, but allowing students to use the medium of their choice - essay, artwork, poem, music, etc., to express themselves. All entries could be displayed for public view. Jeneese Karlen suggested that items could be on display at the Heritage Center for the summer months.
Ideas for how this would be presented to youth and how it would be run will be reviewed at the next meeting. Contact Kathy Grell with ideas for this activity.

A motion was made to donate to the Bridge Street Mission in Wausau to help pay for Thanksgiving meals.

Join Marathon library staff and other literary enthusiasts during the monthly book club gathering on November 13, 5:45 p.m. This month’s book is “There, There,” by Tommy Orange.
Farmers Market
The Marathon City Farmers Market will run every Thursday from 2-6 p.m. until October 26. The market is located in downtown Marathon at 400 Main St.
S tratford Trunk R Treat Carving Contest
Zion Lutheran Church is sponsoring the Trunk R Treat on October 31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. by Klemme Park. Everyone is invited to participate by dressing up and decorating a truck.
New this year, Zion is partnering with the Caring For Others organization from the Stratford High School with a Pumpkin Carving Contest. Finished carved pumpkins must be brought down to Klemme Park by 5 p.m. on October 31. Entry fee is a canned good for the Stratford Food Pantry. Two prizes each will be awarded to three different age groups. Voting will be done during Trunk R Treat by money donations for their favorite pumpkins. Money received from voting will also be given to the Stratford Food Pantry.
