The Stratford Journal 50 years ago... thursday, october 25, 1973 Ebenezer honors its 90th anniversary An excellent crowd attended the 90th anniversary of the Ebenezer United Church of Christ on October 21. Following the morning worship service, a potluck dinner was served.
A tape recording by the oldest member, Mrs. Jacob Dix, 95, Wausau, told of the early years when she was a young girl. Mrs. Katherine Koehler, 89, was also given recognition. She was baptized the year after the organization of the church. 25 years ago... wednesday, october 28, 1998 Stratford School Board sets the property tax levy Property owners will pay less per thousand dollars of property value to the Stratford School District this year.
The school board approved a levy of $1,471,455 for the 1998-99 school year on Monday night. This is up nearly $30,000 from last yearâs levy.
However, with property values increasing, the mill rate, the tax rate per thousand dollars of property value, decreased by eight percent.
Last year, a homeowner with a $50,000 house paid $556.50 in school property taxes. This year, a $50,000 homeowner will pay $512.
Record Review 50 years ago... thursday, october 25, 1973 Carnival plans noted at chamber meeting A winter carnival, probably to be held in conjunction with the Athens Snowmobile Clubâs races in February, was one of the main topics of discussion at the Monday meeting of the Athens Chamber of Commerce.
Ideas for the winter event include a prince and princess contest, snow sculpturing, hockey, cross-country ski races and snowmobile events. Terry Olson was placed in charge of the winter carnival idea committee and was urged by President Ray Perkins to pick members of the chamber to help her. 25 years ago... wednesday, october 28, 1998 Marathon Cheese Corp. makes history It was an exciting day for Marathon Cheese Corp. employees when on October 15 the one millionth pallet of cheese crossed the Marathon plantâs skyway. The elevated conveyor system, designed by Leo Bornheimer, has been in operation since September 17, 1991. During the past seven years, 1,250,000 pounds of finished cheese product has made the 415 foot trip from the production plant to the finished goods warehouse. This constitutes 31,250 semi loads of product shipped to all 48 contiguous states as well as to Puerto Rico and Hawaii.
Marathon Lions donate to swim center - 1998
Jennifer Stillings, facility director of the Raymond & Marie Goldbach Swim Center, holds a check presented by Marathon Lions Club President Mike Lang and Treasurer Pat Kilsdonk. The money was donated to cover the cost of a new telephone system for the swim center.

Stratford hosts annual Sok Hop - 1998
Students in grades K-6 danced the night away at Stratford High School during the annual Red Ribbon Week Sok Hop in October 1998. The event concluded Red Ribbon Week for the high school SADD members, who hosted the event.
