A win in Wisconsin
To the Editor: Democrats are claiming victory in last week’s Supreme Court race, but Judge Crawford’s win was much more than that. Democrats comprise barely a third of the electorate. I believe the winning margin in her 55-45% win was made up of people realizing that habeas corpus, better known as ‘due process of law,’ must be applied to everyone or it is of value to no one.
Elon Musk and President Trump invested heavily in an attempt to influence the election with money and empty promises. Wisconsin voters had already seen enough of their kind of justice. Musk and Trump have fired thousands of people with no rational justification. Trump has stripped legal status from hundreds of thousands of people with no explanation. He has ordered law abiding people to be apprehended by masked officials and imprisoned without being charged for a crime. Trump has had hundreds of people locked up in a foreign prison without charging them with a crime, without a court hearing, without notifying their families and with no chance to appeal. History has shown when governments are allowed to do these things to one group they soon do the same to others. Trump has already accused a district judge of treason for ruling against him. His closest advisor called a decorated veteran and US Senator a traitor. He has told a Supreme Court Justice, “I won’t forget.” He has tried to intimidate lawyers bringing cases against his policies. Trump has attempted to corrupt the entire federal legal system. Wisconsin citizens went to the polls last Tuesday and voted to keep Wisconsin courts free from corruption. It seemed like a large victory, but it was only a small step. The Trump Administration’s increasingly frequent and hostile attacks on our nation’s legal system create a very dangerous threat to the rights of every American.
