Fifty years of Hornets volleyball to be celebrated at Colby alumni tournament this coming weekend
The Colby Hornet Athletic Booster Club will be hosting their biannual Colby High School Women’s Alumni Tournament on March 29 & 30. This is one of the major fundraisers for the booster club who sponsors Colby youth athletics. Women’s volleyball was established in 1974 and multiple festivities will be recognizing 50 years of volleyball at Colby High School. We welcome all former alumni and coaches back to Colby to celebrate. 18 teams comprised of 135 players, ranging from 1982 to 2024, will take the court for the right to play for the coveted championship T-shirts and the right to be called Champions of 2025.
Festivities begin on Friday night with a registration meeting at the Colby Middle School Gymnasium at 7 p.m. All teams need to have a representative present to obtain informational packets. The tournament rules and bylaws will be discussed.
Volleyball action will begin on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m/ in the high school, middle school, and elementary gymnasiums. Teams are divided into three pools and will play round robin during pool play on Saturday’s action. Come on out and eat some delicious food at the concession stand while cheering on your favorite team. Girl Scouts will be selling cookies as well as Colby Showchoir selling their delicious Cheese Days smoothies and coffee bar.
On Sunday, teams will play in the Division 1 or 2 brackets according to the results of the previous day’s games. Sunday’s action will begin at 10:00 a.m. The two divisional championship games will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. for division 2 and 4:15 for Division 1 in the high school gym. A special presentation on the history of Colby volleyball with guest speakers Kathy Schwoch (first head coach), Linda Kalepp, and Lori Frome will be held at 3:15 p.m. in the High School gym. To keep up on future alumni events, join the Facebook group “Colby High School Volleyball Alumni.”
All proceeds will go to the youth programs sponsored by the Booster Club. The weekend looks to be jam packed with lots of excitement and camaraderie.
