February brings month of reading, fun at CCL

Library Love Story

Here is a chance to help the Colby Community Library (CCL). Your library story is powerful. Tell your short or long story about your favorite thing to do at the library, how the library has helped you out this year, what keeps you coming to the library, or your favorite memory. We will share Library Love Stories with our elected officials on Library Legislative Day and use your comments to shape our programs and services.

Visit the Colby Community Library website and fill out the simple form or pick up a paper copy to fill out and return to the library. You may choose to give your name or remain anonymous with your comments.

Saturday, Jan. 21 found 21 youth weavers and 21 basket makers gathering in the RCU Community Room at the CCL. Due to the popularity of the events, look for weaving events to be offered again by the Friends of the Colby Library.

There are a variety of free take and make Valentine crafts ready for youth and their families to enjoy. Pick up different ones each time you visit the CCL. After they are gone, St. Patrick’s Day crafts will be available.

Story Times

Pick up a schedule for the winter/ spring sessions of Story Times for preschool aged children. Story Times are held on most Friday mornings at 10 a.m. and feature stories, poems, songs, and crafts. Adults should plan on joining in with the educational fun.

Rainbow Challenge

The CCL is offering book and movie challenges for adults. Patrons are invited to “Read the Rainbow” with books or “View the Rainbow” with movies. Only seven books or movies are required for each folder. Check out books or movies at the CCL to be eligible for Abby/Colby Chamber certificates or gift cards in the year-end drawing. The more folders completed throughout the year, the more chances of winning. The drawing will be December 29, 2023.

Forward Bank, Colby location, will be collecting books for the Friends of the Colby Library annual Colby Cheese Days book and movie sale. From January 1-July 1, books and movies (in good condition) maybedroppedoff atForwardBank during regular business hours. Please do not bring the materials to the CCL, as all sorting will be done at Forward Bank. The sale, sponsored by the Friends of the CCL, will be held for two days, from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., on Thursday, July 13 and Friday, July 14 at the Colby Lions Shelter.

The CCL has paper copies of the basic 2022 Federal and State tax forms and instructions. Look for them in the library vestibule. Please note that computers are available to download other tax forms; however, there is a charge for printing them. Library staff can direct you to finding the forms you need but please remember staff members are not tax consultants.

Book Club

The evening book club will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. Becky Schmelzer will be the leader for the discussion of “The Guest List” by Lucy Foley.

Check out the selection of magazines offered at the CCL. Also, several new newspaper subscriptions were added to read at the library. In addition to the Tribune-Phonograph, enjoy the TRG, Record- Review, Star News, and Sentinel & Rural News. We will also have a subscription to the Clark County Press arriving shortly.

Craft and Hobby

Beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, craft and hobby will be held. Bring individual crafts to work on or plan to help with preparations for the upcoming service projects.

Mark your calendars to help with the Maddie Thums Memorial Sew-a-thon and the Make-A-Difference Day (MADD) projects. The date is Saturday, March 4 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The service day will be onsite this year and is being co-chaired by Ailene Loertscher, Deb Laski, and Vicky Calmes.

“10 for 10”: To celebrate ten years of service days, ten projects have been prepared to help the Marshfield Medical Center and the Colby Community Library youth programs.

No project take home bags will be available before the sewing day. If there are projects left after the sew-a-thon, people can pick them up and return the finished projects by March 24.

Lunch will be served at noon. The Thrivent Action Team program and Creative Hideaway are financial supporters of these community service projects. Inclement weather date is Saturday, March 11 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Please RSVP to the library at 715-2232000.

The ShowCase Players are offering two pairs of tickets to the March performance of “God’s Favorite”. When visiting the CCL, register to win tickets to your choice of shows to be held March 3-5 and March 10-12. By supporting and attending local community theater shows, everyone helps keep this local tradition alive.

The Friends of the Colby Library annual meeting will be Thursday, March 9 at 6 p.m. Current members and those wishing to join to support the CCL are invited. Refreshments will be served.

Following the meeting, an author presentation by Al Gurtner will begin at 7 p.m. about his book, “A Village Named Unity.” Copies are available at the CCL now and will be there that evening for purchase.

If you are pregnant or have a child under the age of one and are not on a city water system, the Clark County Health Department (CCHD) has supplied the CCL with free water test kits. Please ask for them at the circulation desk. The CCHD has also provided the CCL with free adult masks and COVID-19 test kits for the public to take as needed.
