The Colby/Abbotsford swim team claimed its third straight dual victory to go 3-0 in conference meets to start the season. They defeated the Antigo Red Robins in a tight meet, racking up 86 points to the visitors’ 65.

It was also the co-op’s third straight home meet, and the fourth straight event held at the Colby High School pool, as they also hosted an early season pentathlon. The team has looked comfortable on their home turf thus far, having yet to lose a dual meet.

Much like last week’s meet against Mosinee, Colby/Abby won the majority of the varsity events, taking six of the 11 varsity events. They also took advantage of being able to field more swimmers in a majority of the events, which gave them additional opportunities for points.

The co-op’s freshmen trio of Jordan Jakel, Madisyn Schraufnagel, and Brezlyn Boyer won four of the team’s five individual event victories.

Boyer won both of her individual events, winning the 200yard freestyle with a time of 2:20.99 and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:20.61. She was also part of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay team that took first. Jakel, Olivia Krause, and Lilly Graun combined with Boyer to post a time of 2:02.12 in the event.

Jakel also won the 200-yard IM, beating Antigo senior Michaela Tomcyzk by ten seconds with a time of 2:40.04. She also took second behind another Antigo senior, Morgan Rank, in the 100-yard freestyle.

Schraufnagel took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.71. She was also part of the closest event of the evening. The 100-yard butterfly was a two person duel between Schraufnagel and Antigo’s Chloe Tainter. The Red Robin barely edged out Schraufnagel, with only tenths of a second between the two swimmers. Tainter finished with a final time of 1:06.21 and Schraufnagel came in just a hair slower with a time of 1:06.91.

Sophomore Chloe Cihlar also added a win for the co-op, winning the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.51, defeating Tainter by just over a second in the event. She also took second behind her teammate Schraufnagel in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 1:11.49.

Antigo made the meet a bit closer by managing to take first in two of the three relay events, narrowly defeating the co-op’s top teams in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle. However, Colby/Abby’s ability to field a second team in those events mitigated the impact of those close losses.

With yet another victory under its belt, the co-op swim traveled to Black River Falls on Tuesday evening for their first away dual of the season. This is the start of a long stretch of away meets, which will continue on Thursday, September 22, when the team heads to Medford to take on the Raiders. The meet is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
