Hornet golfers start off season in Medford
The Colby Hornets varsity golf team jumped on the course Thursday, April 21, at Black River’s par 36 golf course to kick off their conference season. The golf course opened up for the day to the high school golf meet. The course was in a wet condition and played slow for the players.
The Hornets golf team placed fifth with a team score of 238. The top three competing teams were Neillsville with a score of 175, Columbus Catholic with a score of 192 and Stanley Boyd with a score of 225.
The top five golfers for the Hornets were Brandon Boyer in 11th place with a score of 55, Tucker Brost in 15th place with a score of 58, Brody Decker in 17th place with a score of 60, Carson Rau placed 22nd with a score of 65, and Kayden Weise placed 23rd with a score a 67.
“I can see the team studying their game, understanding that they had a bad shot or a bad hole. But, they are looking at what they can do to improve. They are also asking questions and wanting to know what to do in order to get better,” said coach Brandon Butkus.
Lake Wissota
The Colby golfers competed at Lake Wissota Golf Course on Monday, April 25. The team experienced their first 18 hole match of the season in a Cloverbelt/Dairyland crossover meet.
The golfers scored 462 as a team for a place of 13th. The top schools that competed were McDonell-Regis in first place with a score of 323, Bloomer in second place, with a score of 343 and Marshfield Columbus-Spencer with a score of 354.
“Today’s match held some new obstacles as the course was in beautiful shape considering our wet spring. Our athletes experienced much faster greens than those close to home. The wind and 35 degree temperatures played in for sure,” said Butkus.
