The Colby Hornets began their track season in a special way, taking part in an indoor track meet for the first time since 2019 after COVID-19 guidelines shut down such events in 2020 and 2021.

The Hornets would go on to place fifth overall at the Marshfield Tigers Invite on Tuesday, March 22, with a final score of 54 points.

Marshfield led the field with 100.5 points, followed by Medford Area with 84 points and Owen-Withee placing third with 68.5 points.

Junior Caden Healy showed off his impressive speed and power, leading Colby with a pair of first place finishes in the 60-meter dash in a time of 6.37 seconds and the shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 11.5 inches. Healy added a second place showing in the 220 yard dash with a time of 25.56 seconds.

In the 440 yard event, Hayden Kaiser, ran with a time of 1:04.12 for fourth.

Followed by Carter Roth in ninth place with a time of 1:08.55.

In the 4x800 relay race: Max Adams, Richard Streveler, Carter Roth and Brandon Voelker placed fourth with a time of 10:43.34.

In the 4x160 relay: Caden Kleparski, Caden Healy, Bryan Camargo and Joseph Streveler placed fifth with a time of 1:18.50 In the 600-meter hurdles, Josiah Bridger placed fifth with a time of 10.62. In the one mile race, Max Adams placed sixth with a time of 5:35.87.

In the shot put, Derek Jeske took sixth place with a distance of 39 feet six inches. Carter Roth, Brandon Voelker, Joseph Streveler and Richard Streveler all competed in the 4x400 relay they placed seventh with a time of 4:33.06.

Multiple Hornets competed in the junior varsity portion of Tuesday’s meet carding strong results. In the shot put Eric Martinez took second with a distance of 36 feet two inches, Grant Oelrich finished fourth with a throw of 33 feet 9.25 inches. Luis Nava was seventh with a throw of 30 feet, eight inches.

For the 880-yard event, Brandon Schoelzel, with a time of 2:51.53 placed fifth, followed by sixth place Parker Johnson with a time of 2:52.82. Cayden Kleparski placed seventh in the 220 yard event with a time of 27.72. Josiah Bridger placed eighth in the 440 yard event with a time of 1:11.91.

Northern Badger

The Colby Hornets appeared to have shaken off the rust on Saturday, heading down to Menomonie to take part in the Northern Badger - Small Schools at Johnson Field House on the campus of UW - Stout.

The boys very nearly pulled off a surprise victory, placing third out of over 30 teams. Chetek/Weyerhauser defeated a challenge from Prescott, winning 54 to 53 points, with Colby in third with their 43 points.

Junior Caden Healy very nearly won the meet thanks to his swift feet. Healy dominated the sprinting events, and as in Marshfield, showed off his strength as well. Healy topped the field in two events, and also picked up a pair of runner up results.

Healy won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.71 seconds, and then recorded a distance of 20 feet, 11.5 inches in the long jump for his second title.

He then ran a 23.79 in the 200-meter dash for second place, and proceeded to take second in the shot put. Healy’s throw of 46 feet, half an inch smash his distance for the shot put, smashed his throw from Tuesday, improving upon Marshfield’s top throw by over two feet.

Max Adams recorded more points for Colby when he placed fifth in the 1,600-meter run, running those two miles in a time of 11:49.15 - a personal best indoor time.

Like Healy, senior Derek Jeske also scored points in the shot put. Jeske threw the shot 42 feet, five inches. That distance was an improvement of over almost three feet from Marshfield.

The boys next meet will be a return to UW- Stout, for another indoor invitational on Friday, April 1.


BLAZE A TRAIL -Colby’s Jay Irizarry springs down the indoor track during the 60-yard dash in the Boson Fieldhouse at Marshfield on Tuesday, March 22. Irizarry placed inside the top 30 in that race, and inside the top 25 in the 220-yard dash. Irizarry finished inside the top 20 at the Northern Badger at the Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie two days later.

TEST YOUR MIGHT -Derek Jeske is locked in as he throws the shot in Marshfield on Tuesday, March 22. Jeske took sixth place in the event. He also took sixth on Saturday, but improved by three feet.
