A/C middle school wrestlers qualify

The Abbotsford/Colby middle school wrestling co-op continues to enjoy an excellent season, with numerous athletes qualifying for the state tournament this year.

Fresh off winning the first ever middle school Cloverbelt Conference championship, multiple wrestlers punched their ticket to state on Saturday, March 19.

“Our middle school and youth wrestlers had a great day Saturday in Merrill,” said middle school head wrestling coach Mike Jakel. “We had twelve wrestlers try and qualify for state, and we had seven get through.”

The seven Abby/Colby middle school wrestlers who made it through to state was Isaac Garcia 13-14 year old bracket, 72 pounds division; Amara Gudmundson 13-14 year old bracket, 90 pounds division; Griffin Colby 11-12 year old bracket, 78 pounds division; Pieter Verhoef 11-12 year old bracket, 100 pounds division; Aiden Burt 09-10 year old bracket 150 pound division; Matt Jakel 07-08 year old bracket, 95 pounds division and Tristen Smazal 07-08 year old bracket, 115 pound division.

Also competing in the regional division for the Abby/Colby wrestling co-op, but who were unable to qualify for the state tournament, was Brodie Halsell 13-14 year old bracket, 57 pounds division; Sawyer Umlauft 13-14 year old bracket, 57 pounds division; Levi Schjoneman 13-14 year old bracket, 72 pounds division; Riley Burt 11-12 year old bracket, 110 pounds division and Ezryn Lieders 07-08 year old bracket, 110 pounds divisiom.

There will be an update in next week’s paper detailing the results of the Abby/ Colby middle school state qualifying wrestlers and their performances.
