Colby K-12 to re-examine district wide goals for ‘22-23
The Colby School District discussed potential ways they can impact student’s lives by altering the district goals during their monthly board meeting on Monday, Feb. 21.
Member of the district’s board of education sat down and discussed the reconfi guration of the district’s goals after the 2021-22 academic calendar’s goals have expired.
The district had intended to re-examine the goals prior to Monday’s meetings, but had to place them on hold due issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The goals pertain to more than just academics, but also pertain to community engagement, use of technology and athletic and student facilities on campus.
“Teaching and learning, community engagement, technology, and the facilities were the four primary goal areas,” said Colby superintendent Steven Kolden.
According to the board of education approved goals 2018-2021: underneath teaching and learning they had providing staff development for all staff to understand and expand their knowledge of classroom applications that increase student achievement.
Underneath community engagement, become a community that attracts and retains students. For technology it was to maintain implementation of a continued rotation and upgrades of district infrastructure and devices. And for facilities the, Colby School District wishes to enhance school grounds and athletic fields.
These goals were set for 2018-2021; now that they are expired, the Colby School District will have to implement new goals.
The district’s plan is schedule a meeting on April 19 at 6:30 p.m. Colby’s board of education and will gather several educators from across the elementary, middle and high school, together they will discuss ways to impact the district, and to discuss a new plan for the goals over the course of the next three academic years. The Colby School District touch base on these goals every other month.
In an effort to get the Colby School District back to financial health, the board approved a plan to defease some of the district’s debt.
“The school district over levied money at the beginning of the school year,” Colby superintendent Dr. Steven Kolden said. So they will do a cash defeasance which Kolden describe to the board as, “Say if you have additional funds from Fund 39, in this case they will take the additional funds and use it pay off the end of their debt. It can also be used to prepay referendum debt.”
“I haven’t used the word defeasance in awhile” Kolden said. “Our mil rate went down 1.1 mi.”
The Colby school district has an estimated total additional funds of $1,448.00.
Funds will be deposited into an escrow account for prepayment of debt. From there, the escrow agent will pay off the district’s debt on the call date, which takes place on March 1, 2025. “2030 is when our debt expires,” said board member Eric Elmhorst.
The next Colby School board meeting will be on March 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the distance learning lab.
