The Abbotsford Falcons girls basketball team was in need of some momentum as they enter the final weeks of the 2021-22 regular season.

The Falcons were on a three game losing streak after falling to Spencer, Edgar and Athens, but relief came in the form of a 57-42 victory over the Prentice Buccaneers at home on Thursday.

The victory gives the Falcons a season sweep over their Marawood - North rivals and pushes their overall record to 11-7 and 5-6 in league play.

Abbotsford was in complete control of the game, cruising to a 33-12 lead in the first half off the back of a great shooting performance from senior Alea Graff and sophomore Sydney Falteisek.

Graff buried a three and two more shots for seven points, and Falteisek had 13 points in the first frame. Brissa Diaz and Adriana Fuentes showed their range with both swishing threes.

The Falcons continued to score at a nice rate in the second half, but their defense faltered down the stretch, allowing the Buccaneers to score 30 points in the final frame.

Prentice’s Kali Heikkenen turned in a 23 point performance, but the Falcons shut down the rest of her team, as no other Buccaneer scored more than seven points.

Graff and Falteisek led the way for the Falcons. Graff turned in a season high 18 points. Falteisek finished with a team high 21 points. Briseida Escalera added eight points, Sommer Brodhagen scored four and Diaz and Fuentes chipped in with three points.

Abbotsford returns to action on Thursday, travelling to Marathon City to battle the 9-7 Red Raiders. Tip-off is at 7:15 p.m.
