The Colby Hornets boys basketball team started the new year with a bang, pummeling the Thorp Cardinals on the road to the tune of a 75-33 victory over their Western Cloverbelt hosts.

It’s an impressive victory on multiple fronts for the Hornets considering they last played a game on Dec. 20, were on the road and Thorp entered the game with a winning record of 4-3.

Colby used a torrid first half to set the tone of the game, scoring 41 points in the first frame. The Hornets defense was even more effective, holding Thorp to under 20 points, and Colby went into the break up 41-18.

It was more of the same in the second half. Colby’s offense continued to click, with the Hornets converting 30 of 68 field goal attempts, including an efficient 22 of 45 two point attempts.

Colby’s lead continued to expand in the second half, and the Hornets added 35 points in the second half. Colby’s defense was even more effective in the last stanza, holding the ‘Cards to just 15 points.

Senior guard Richard Streveler got 2022 off to a fast start, scoring a team high 23 points after he went 9 of 17 on his shots. Brody Decker was also in double figures, scoring 13 points.

Tevin Rue nearly joined Decker and Streveler in double digits, finishing with nine points. Mateo Lopez and Carson Rau added seven and six points.

Tucker Meyer, Brandon Volker and Kaden Wiese all picked up four points, Joe Streveler had three and Caden Healy added two more points.

The Hornets hosted their first game of the new year on Tuesday, welcoming the Rib Lake Redmen to Colby for a nonconference clash. Fresh off a 40 point victory over Thorp the night before, Colby carried that fine form into their match with Rib Lake.

The Redmen were coming off a long break, with their last meeting a 66-56 victory over Abbotsord on Dec. 21, and some rust on their game was apparent from the start.

The Hornets raced out to an early lead in the first half. Brody Decker seemingly could not miss, nailing four triples in the first half en route to a game high, and season high, 24 points, 18 of which came in the first half.

Rib Lake managed to close the gap late in the half, but Colby went into the last stanza with a 39-31 lead. Colby kept the pressure on Rib Lake in the second, going up by over 20 points before head coach Jimmy Flink subbed in his bench.

The Hornets out-scored Rib Lake 3929 to improve to 6-2 on the year. Richard Streveler added 17 points, Mateo Lopez scored nine, and Kaden Wiese added seven as 11 Hornets scored.

Colby’s next game is on the road against Spencer. Tip-off is 7:15 p.m.
