Golfers hitting their stride

The Colby Hornets varsity golf squad is finishing up its regular season, and as the year goes on, the Hornets’ technique is getting better and better, says head coach Brandon Butkus.

“Although the scores don’t necessarily show it, there was some great improvement in most of our teams swing,” Butkus noted after Colby’s meet in Owen on May 18. “I noticed a lot cleaner contact and better directional hitting.”

The Hornets finished ninth as a team at Meadowview Golf Course. Scattered showers and cloudy skies led to interesting conditions on the course as Colby carded a final score of 238.

“Even though Owen is probably our easiest course in our conference, there are always those couple areas on a course that will get you into trouble,” Butkus said after the meet was finished.

Jaden Underwood was back in front for the Hornets on Tuesday, carding a 51 to finish 36th overall. Justin Hill carded the next lowest score for Colby, finishing in 39th place with 54 strokes. Carson Rau was 42nd overall, tallying 56 strokes.

“Aside from only one or two rough holes Jaden, Justin and Carson fought for the top spot Monday night,” Butkus said about his players finishing so close to one another.

Tony Derrico finished 49th with 77 strokes. Kyla Kapfhamer made her first appearance on varsity. She placed 50th overall with a score of 80.

Neillsville Invite

Colby found itself in Neillsville on Thursday, battling conference rivals on the Neillsville Country Club golf course. The Hornets were tenth with 252 strokes.

“The course was in great condition. Weather conditions were good as well,” coach Butkus said.

Colby senior Jaden Underwood is peaking at the right time, with the postseason right around the corner. Jaden finished 24th overall after carding a 49.

“Jaden carded his best score of the year, which is great to see on his last nine hole match as a senior,” Butkus said.

Carson Rau was just ten strokes behind Underwood, carding a 59 to finish 42nd overall. Tony Derrico was third on the team, carding a 71 for 50th place. Justin Hill and Kyla Kaphamer rounded things out, carding 74 and 79 to finish in 51st and 52nd place.

“Kyla came home with a score better than those she has gotten previously at her JV matches,” Butkus said about his player’s developments. “It is great to see the improvement.”
