Carter defeats multiple state champions

Colby High junior Carter Grewe continues to dominate on the national wrestling circuit. A week after taking third place at the USAW National Recruiting Showcase, Grewe once again found his way to the podium at a nationwide wrestling tournament on April 4.

The big, burly wrestler finished third in the Junior 220 pound weight class amongst a stacked field at the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, at the University of Northern Iowa’s UNI Dome.

Grewe began his day by completly outclassing Dirk Morley of Denver, Colo., with a 23-8 technical fall in the first round. He backed this victory up with an even more impressive one, taking down a state champion from Florida in the second round.

In a tense, back and forth battle, Grewe overcame Tristan Middlebrook, the FHSAA 2A 220 pound champion by the narrowest of margins, winning a 1-0 decision to punch his ticket into the quarterfinals. From there the talented grappler faced another state champion.

This time Grewe was able to overpower Cayden Winter of Andale, Kan., the KSHSAA 4-A 220 pound champ by pinning him at the 3:54 mark to advance to the semifinals. For the third match in a row, Grewe went toe to toe with another state champion, but Bradley Hill, the state champion in the 220 weight class in Iowa’s 3-A division, was able to do just enough to survive Grewe’s challenge, topping Carter with a 3-0 decision.

Grewe bounced back in the consolations semifinal bout, dropping Kalob Runyon, an all-state wrestler from Iowa, via a pinfall at 4:02. With that victory, Grewe earned the right to wrestle for third place. Once again, it was a close match that pitted Carter against a top flight recruit.

Carter was able to maintain his heady style of wrestling, and defeated Mack Hubbel of Overland, Kan., with a 1-0 decision. Grewe will now take several weeks off before he’s back on the circuit.

He’ll look to continue to build on his recent success and run of good from through the summer, where he hopes to turn head, and college recruiters, at the 2021 U.S. Marine Corps/USAW Junior Nationals in Fargo, N. D.
