for Winter 2024 SECOND GRADERS HAVE FUN MEASURING, SEARCHING FOR ‘DINO FOSSILS’ THIRD GRADERS WORK ON EQUATIONS, TELLING TIME, CURSIVE We are into our second trimester, and the third graders have been working very hard. Our classes just completed the winter session of FastBridge testing for reading and math. It is always beneficial to check to see how we are progressing in comparison with other schools on a national level. The third graders continue to push ahead in the classroom. In math, we have been working on the addition and subtraction of larger numbers, estimation, basic multiplication, fractions, mass and solving multiplestep story problems. We have just begun telling time to the minute and solving problems that require figuring out elapsed time. In reading, we are writing pourquoi tales, which tell a tale of how something came to be, and we have been setting reading goals and taking Accelerated Reading tests online to see how well we understood the books that we read. We have been working on subject-verb agreement in sentences and forming new words by adding suffixes. Students have learned all of the lowercase and uppercase letters in cursive, and now we are beginning to write a little bit in cursive. The weather has been relatively mild, so students have enjoyed going outside for recess and playing on the new playground equipment. EXPERIENCE LEARNING IN SPENCER THE ROCKET Spencer second graders are working hard after their break and are finishing up their measurement unit in math. They’re learning about different units and learning how to choose the best unit to measure different objects. They also have been excited to complete a “dino dig” and discover some fossils! They will use this activity to write a compelling narrative to tell about their experience! ~Wendy Comstock, second grade ~Mrs. Farrell, Mrs. Payant and Mrs. Hintze, third grade teachers SpellingSpelling teacher BeeBee WinnersWinners CHAMPIONS, C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N-S, CHAMPIONS Congratulations to Kynzlie Thieme (above right), and runner-up Johnna Haworth (above left), for winning the Spencer School Spelling Bee. On Jan. 15, students in grades 5-8 participated in the school spelling bee in the LuCille Tack Center. Given words like “sentinel” and “phlebotomy,” these students were able to successfully spell their way around the other contestants to become the champions! These winners will be moving on to regionals, hosted in Chippewa Falls on Feb. 12. The process started off in early November and reached into late December. English teachers in grades 5-8 conducted individual spelling bees in their classrooms. From there, six people were sent into the grade level bee. This narrowed the competition down to two per grade level, for a total of eight students participating in the school-wide spelling bee. Congratulations to those who participated in the school spelling bee as well as those who won. Your studying habits and efforts have made Spencer proud. Also, a big thank you to the people who helped in making this event happen. You are appreciated more than you know. PAID ADVERTISEMENT
