NOTICE City of Cornell Minutes of Common Council Meeting Oct. 17, 2024 7 p.m., mayor Mark Larson called the regular council meeting to order, at the city council chambers. The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence honoring all individuals who have, or are, protecting our freedom. Minutes taken by administrator/clerktreasurer DeJongh. Council members present: Terry Smith, Debra Semanko, Bill Kvapil, Sandra Schecklman, Floyd Hickethier, and 7:12 p.m., Turany. Guests present: Ginna Young, and Dan and Wanda Sinn. Motion Hickethier, seconded Smith, to accept the agenda, as printed. Carried five ayes, one absent. Motion Smith, seconded Kvapil, to approve the regular council meeting minutes of Oct. 3, 2024. Carried five ayes, one absent. Dan and Wanda Sinn, 1612 S. 8th St., circulated and filed a neighborhood petition, with the council, to have the speed limit lowered on S. 8th St., from Baribeau Rd. to the city limits, from 35 mph to 25 mph. Matter was directed to the Public Health and Safety Committee. Motion Schecklman, seconded Hickethier, to pass onto Chippewa County, that the city council does not support the purchase of 2,400 acres of private land for the Ice Age Trail and other recreational opportunities. Carried five ayes, one absent. The City of Cornell was notified that we did not receive the Library Flexible Facilities Program grant. The Chippewa County Public Health’s effort, to provide free nitrate testing on private water wells, was well received, with quite a few people bringing in samples. Motion Hickethier, seconded Smith, to approve bills totaling $41,789.87. Roll call vote carried five ayes, Turany absent. Forthcoming events: • Fall Yard Waste Clean-up, Oct. 28- Nov. 1, 2024. • Mill Yard Park Trunkor- Treat, Oct .31, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. • Recommended Trickor- Treat hours for the city, 4-6 p.m. • 2025 budget hearing is set for Nov. 7, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. • Winter night parking restrictions start Nov. 1 • Overview of “Day in the Life” Chippewa County Human Services, Oct. 29 • General election – Nov. 5, 2024 Turany reported on Halls, Parks and Recreation meeting of Oct. 15, 2024. It was reported that Miles Palmer had purchased skate park amenities from Ladysmith, and is installing them and doing work on them at the Mill Yard skate park. Committee would like to see reserve signs placed at the pavilions, when they are being rented. Motion Smith, seconded Hickethier, to adjourn. Carried six ayes.
