Tales of our Beginnings Cadott • Cornell • Lake Holcombe areas The Families of Roux, Popple and Prentice Jeffrey Roux was born in 1861, in St. Pierre Les Bacquets, Canada. He earned his living by lumbering, farming and hauling quarry rock for many buildings in the Rice Lake area. He married Melene and the Roux had seven children; Melene died in 1903, and in 1904, Jeff married Henrietta Derousseau. They had four children together. The youngsters spoke French until they entered public school. Jeffrey died in 1936. Anna Roux came to Cornell, to work in the print shop at the Cornell Paper Mill. She met and married Charlie Popple, a widower, in 1922. Charlie was 18 years older than his bride. He was foreman of the wood yard at the mill at the time of his death in 1950. Of the children from that family, were Norman, Mary, Arlene, Virginia, Harold, and Patricia or “Pat.” Pat married Jerry Prentice (born 1930) in 1952. The two remained married until Jerry’s death in 1990. Pat then married Lloyd E. Lind, also born in 1930.
