NORTHERN BADGER-LARGE SCHOOLS
Scoring wasn’t easy, but the Medford Raiders found ways to do it in a few events during Friday’s Northern Badger Large Schools Classic, held at UW-Stout’s indoor track and field facility.
Medford’s boys scored 10 points and tied Bloomer for 12th place as 19 different teams scored in the meet. The girls placed 12th out of 16 scoring teams with seven points.
Senior Evan Paul earned Medford’s top placement in the boys meet by taking fourth in the high jump competition. After clearing 5 feet, 10 inches in the team’s opening meet at Marshfield March 25, Paul got over the bar at 6 feet on Friday to score five points. He was 2 inches below Grayson Bates of Eastview, Minn. and Derek Ongna of Marshfield. Menomonie’s Jaevon Berg won the event at 6-4. Raider Hayden Koester tied for 16th by clearing 53.
Senior Brandon Curtis scored three points with a sixth-place finish in the 3,200-meter run with his time of 10:55.21. He missed the top five by 0.13 seconds. D.C. Everest freshman Will VanSlyke won the race in 10:34.78. Raider Evan Pagel was 21st in 13:16.68.
Senior Erich Moretz got Medford’s last two points by placing seventh in the shot put competition. He improved on his throw of 40-4 from Marshfield by getting a throw out to 42-3, 5 inches behind sixthplace finisher Peter Cigler. Caleb Loomis of Rochester Mayo, Minn. won with a throw of 49-0.25. Raider Logan Langdon was 25th at 34-7.
Paul added a 10th-place finish in the triple jump at 39-9, while Luke Klapatauskas was 15th for Medford at 375.5. Paul also placed 13th in the 200-meter dash at 24.2 seconds, while Levi Zuleger was 41st in 26.64 seconds. Koester was ninth in the 400-meter dash at 56.59 seconds and Sawyer Hoops was 19th at 58.51 seconds. Jordan Lavin was part of a four-way tie for 10th place in the pole vault. He cleared 9-6. Axel Brushaber cleared 8-6 to tie for 17th.
Caleb Scoles, Peyton Ried, Hoops and Koester placed 12th in the 1,600-meter relay at 3:55.16. Osceola won that race in 3:36.66. Will Daniels was 12th in the 55meter hurdles at 8.99 seconds, while Alan Scheel was 22nd in 10.07 seconds. Scoles was 16th (2:20.18) and Anthony Seidel was 20th (2:20.94) in the 800-meter run. Paxton Rothmeier was 22nd at 7.02 seconds and Hoops was 32nd at 7.15 seconds in the 55-meter dash.
Rochester Mayo won the boys meet with 92 points, while Menomonie (68), D.C. Everest (61.5), Osceola (54.5) and Eastview (49.5) rounded out the top five.
Avery Losiewicz was the key scorer for the Medford girls as she placed third in the pole vault competition. Losiewicz cleared the bar at 8-6 in her first competition of the spring.
Aliyah Pilgrim had the other point, taking eighth in the 400-meter dash at 1:07.62.
The Raiders had some near misses. Pilgrim, Toryn Rau, Alexis Zuleger and Losiewicz took ninth in the 1,600-meter relay at 4:49.1. They were 0.29 seconds behind eighth-place Holmen. Bridget Wesle improved by more than 3 feet from her mark at Marshfield the day before and placed ninth in the shot put competition at 28-10.75. She was 2.5 inches behind eighth-place finisher Brianna Klimek of Menomonie. Rivalee Stokes was 25th for Medford at 23-11.25.
Jordyn Grant took ninth in the triple jump and improved by 6.5 inches over the previous day with a leap of 30-10. She was a half-inch behind Bloomer’s Sophie Strand. Grant also took 25th in the long jump at 11 feet.
Stokes was 20th (8.11) and Grant (8.25) was 24th in the 55-meter dash. Stokes added a 32nd-place finish in the 200-meter dash at 30.67 seconds. Zuleger (32.52) was 43rd.
Sisters Willow (2:58.65) and Ella Dassow (2:58.68) were 23rd and 24th in the 800-meter run. Ella Dassow (6:40.65) and Carly Koski (6:55.21) were 24th and 26th in the 1,600-meter run. Adalyn Dittrich ran the 55-meter hurdles in 12.13 seconds, good for 25th place.
Amery was the girls team champion with 81 points, followed by Rochester Mayo (63.5), Menomonie (63), Marshfield (63) and Osceola (56).
Some of Medford’s athletes will be back at UW-Stout today, Thursday, for the Elite Meet, which starts at 3 p.m. If Mother Nature allows, the Raiders are hoping to host their annual Early Bird Invitational already on Tuesday, starting at 4 p.m.
