Debra Jean Metz

1958-2025

Debra Jean Metz, 67, of Medford, died Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at Aspirus Hospital in Wisconsin Rapids after a lengthy battle with multiple health issues. Deb was born Feb. 11, 1958 in Medford to Robert and Laverne (Schwarz) Scheithauer. She graduated from Medford High School in 1976. Deb loved growing up on a farm and farm life. As a kid, she was a member of FFA where she showed dairy cows. Her love for cows was such that she was also a herdsman for the neighboring farms. She had names for each cow and was a true farm girl.

Following high school, she worked in the oven plant at Tombstone until her marriage.

On Aug. 18, 1984 Deb married Philip G. “Fuzz” Metz at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Medford. Once they were married, Deb accompanied Fuzz on the road as a trucker, hauling pigs. Once her brothers started having kids, she stayed home to babysit for her nieces and nephews. She also ran a sewing, alteration and mending business out of her home. She made wedding dresses for many people, costumes for the Medford figure skating team, and had a steady stream of customers for other sewing projects.

An excellent baker, Deb was known for her fudge, candy and cookies, which she delivered to family, friends and their workplaces for all to enjoy. She had one of the best singing voices around and sang for many church services, weddings and funerals.

In their retirement, Deb and Fuzz built a cabin in the town of Grover. They loved to spend time there just enjoying each other’s company. Fuzz preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 2015.

She is survived by her mother, Laverne Scheithauer; brothers, James, Lee (Jody), Scott (JoAnne) Scheithauer, all of Medford; her dog Miss Dodge Shadow; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert; husband, Fuzz; and many beloved farm pets and dogs.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Hemer-Pickerign Funeral & Cremation Services of Medford is serving the family.
