We have two adult sons/ daughters-in-law and five grandchildren. I am retired from Kraft Heinz as an Area Human Resource Manager. Prior to that I worked at Tombstone Pizza in Medford for 20+ years in a variety of roles in Human Resources and Safety. My husband and I were former co-owners of Paradise Shores 4 Resort in Holcombe and are currently co-owners of Vault Village Boutique in Gilman.

I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Human Resource Management, Concordia University, Mequon, WI and an Associate Degree in Supervisory Management, Chippewa Valley Technical College, Eau Claire, WI.

Why do you want to serve on the School Board? I served one term on the Gilman School Board in the early 2000’s and am currently filling a position on the board from a resignation in May 2024. With two grandchildren and nieces and nephews in our school district, I have a vested interest in seeing our school district succeed. The school is the hub of our community. A vibrant school is a vibrant community. We have a great school and staff and I will do my part to help it continue to succeed in our community.

What do you feel is the biggest challenge facing the school district and what will do as a board member to overcome that challenge?

A declining enrollment and not enough state aid is a challenge in many rural school districts. I am a member of the Gilman Development Foundation and the Design Gilman Team. We partnered last year with the UW Extension program to work together with the community and the school to increase economic development in our community. We hope to continue to grow our community and increase our school enrollment. I will also continue to work with legislators to address the concerns for our rural schools and encourage others in our community to do the same.

What can the school district do within budgetary limitations to attract and retain quality educators and staff?

Sometimes it is not only about the money. It’s a sense of family, community, belonging and knowing you are supported and appreciated. Gilman is a great community to raise a family. Many teachers through the years have shared their stories of coming to Gilman just out of college for their first job, hoping to gain some experience and move on. A great number of those teachers stayed, married and raised their families in our community and retired from the Gilman School District.

Public education has come under scrutiny at the state and federal levels. How can local schools work to restore/ reinforce the public’s confidence in local schools?

Parents want transparency and input on what their children are being taught in public schools. Public schools are losing students to private schools and homeschooling. Covid was a turning point for some parents on opting to home school their children or enroll them in private schools.

Parents also want their children receiving an unbiased, uncontentious education covering the core subjects of English, math, science and history. Most rural schools have kept their focus where it should be, however many of the larger schools have not.

Medford School Board and Gilman Village Board candidate profiles will run in the March 28 issue of The Star News.
