January 20, 1900

Fred Mangus, who on the 22nd of December, stole two grips from the depot belonging to James Smith, and was captured at Rhinelander, was up before Judge Jeffers Monday charged with petty larceny. He was sentenced to 90 days hard labor and will board with Sheriff Bauer for this period of time.

January 15, 1925 Cheese Price Good

Cheese prices have continued good, and the cheese factories have been paying good prices for their milk.

Ed Kloth, proprietor of the Gad Cheese Factory, states that his factory paid 55¢ per pound for butter-fat for the last half of December. The price during the first half of that month was 51¢.

75 Years Ago January 19, 1950 R.E.A. Board Holds Manager Interviews

Four of the seven applicants invited to make personal interviews for the position as manager of the Taylor County Electric Cooperative appeared at a full meeting of the board Monday. Three applicants invited failed to make an appearance.

Dick Steenhoven, whose resignation as manager will become effective as soon as a successor has been secured, stated that in addition to the personal interviews the board reviewed all applications which the special committee had previously received and passed on.

January 16, 1975 Matmen Tourney Set Saturday

Medford senior high school will host a wrestling team tournament Saturday, the tourney to feature eight top area teams. Schools invited with constitute field representation across the state. Merrill high school is the defending champion.

Pairings will include Merrill versus Rice Lake and Stevens Point Pacelli versus New Richmond at 11:30 a.m., and Portage versus Medford and Onalaska versus Loyal at 1:00 p.m.

Perfect snow and weather conditions at the Perkinstown Winter Sports Area last weekend made for a fun-filled day of tubing and skiing. Over 600 people had registered as of Sunday afternoon.

10 Years Ago January 15, 2015 Committee sharpens budget cutting knives

Members of the county finance and personnel committees promised cuts and last week began the cutting process.

Last month committee members generated a list of areas they felt should be looked at first in regard to making cuts. The top six on the list — UW-Extension, law enforcement, highway, Westboro library, grazing specialist and airport — were discussed at the Jan. 8 joint finance and personnel meeting.

In what was essentially a replay of the budget hearings completed in September, staff from the departments defended their programs and worked to educate the committee about the need to keep their departments whole, while members emphasized the need to make cuts or find new revenue to balance the budget.
