Dear Editor, After reading the Dec. 19th article in the Star News detailing the plan to replace the ash trees in the city of Medford, I wanted to share that while it isn't feasible for municipalities to treat ash trees to prevent emerald ash borer, it is possible for a homeowner to do so. A good place to start exploring solutions for ash tree protection is the University of Wisconsin Extension factsheet, 'Is My Ash Tree Worth Treating for Emerald Ash Borer?' found here: https://eab.russell.wisc.edu/wpcontent/ uploads/sites/245/2019/05/1s-My-Ash-Tree-Worth-Treating-2019.pdf Another good resource is the UW-Madison Dept. of Entomology website 'Emerald Ash Borer in Wisconsin' found here: https://eab.russell.wisc.edu/ To find out what the signs and symptoms of borer infestation look like, the following website will help: https://eab.russell.wisc.edu/signs-and-symptoms/ Lastly, if you have specific questions about your particular tree, you can send your question and a picture to the UW-Extension 'Ask Your Gardening Question' at https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/ask-a-gardeningquestion/ We plan on using this information to treat our own ash trees. Homeowners don't have to let this insect have the last word with a tree they care for. With the help of UW-Extension, it is possible to treat your ash tree to prevent emerald ash borer.
