Turf choices ahead for school board Improvement committee calls for stadium, track upgrades and installation of artificial turf on football field.
On Tuesday, the Board of Education’s Athletic Improvement Council discussion revolved around the major agenda item: potential renovation of outdoor athletic facilities at Medford High School.
25 Years Ago December 15, 1999 Emmerich resigns as County Clerk
After 27 years, Taylor County Clerk Roger Emmerich has announced his resignation, effective next March 1.
Emmerich says, “I believe the time is right for me to step aside and let others with new ideas and enthusiasm assume the duties I had with Taylor County government operations. With the approval of the Jail and Courthouse Expansion proceeding to the next step of development, it is the right time to get someone else involved who will see the project through to completion, projected to be in late 2001.”
50 Years Ago December 12, 1974 Elementary School Building Proposal Soundly Beaten
Medford area school district voters flatly turned down a proposition to spend $2 1/4 million for an elementary school building program. The resounding “no” in the referendum here had a better than two to one plurality in a big district turnout, the referendum defeated 1,185 to 473.
While opposition seemed widespread, it is indicated that a strong block against the referendum was voted by Stetsonville area voters. Also it is assumed that opposition came form areas where 10 grade schools would be closed if the elementary school were to be erected in Medford on school property adjoining the Medford senior high school campus.

December 15, 1949 Peterson’s Firm’s Office Looted Sunday Night Unlocked Door Provides Entrance; $233 in Cash Taken
The office of the James Peterson & Sons contracting firm was burglarized about 9 o’clock Sunday night and $233 in cash taken from a box in a desk drawer. Left untouched were a few checks, one of which was in the amount of $3,300, according to George Peterson, member of the firms. The other checks were for smaller amounts.
100 Years Ago December 11, 1924 Medford High Starts Basket Season Thurs.
Medford High School starts her basket ball season this week with a couple of stiff games, both away from home. The first is with Wautoma at Wautoma tonight, Thursday, and the second with Wisconsin Rapids at the Rapids Friday night.
Both these cities have strong teams. Friday’s game is the first scheduled game for Wisconsin Rapids; Wautoma has already played and won two games by large scores, from teams outside the conference, and now has championship aspirations.

December 9, 1899 Official Paper! The Star and News is Awarded the Honors
There has been so much said about the one-cent-afolio county printing fiasco that there is no call for preaching a long sermon. The Republican asked to be released from its foolish contract and the members of the county board accommodated the publishers. New bids were called for and the printing committee yesterday morning award the contract of publishing the county board proceedings to the Star and News at the price of 45 cents a folio.
