Mounting dissatisfaction with the impact of 2011 Wisconsin Act 10 was evident in the comments made by teachers at the Rib Lake Board of Education meeting on Nov. 13. Governor Scott Walker’s controversial legislation, Wisconsin Act 10, severely curtailed the collective bargaining rights of most public employees. Between 15 and 20 teachers attended the board meeting to voice their frustration regarding the impact of the legislation on a small rural district that is struggling to be competitive in recruiting teachers and maintaining a stable workforce.

November 24, 1999 Contest offers school kids chance to win $25,000 for college computer
Here’s a contest that’s nothing to sneeze at. Wisconsin school children in kindergarten through sixth grades have the unique opportunity to design a Puffs tissue box that will be available nationwide for back-to-school 2000. Because Puffs are made in Wisconsin, the contest is only open to Wisconsin students.
50 Years Ago November 21, 1974 Medford Band To Appear at Packer Game
The Medford senior high school Red Raider marching band will make its third appearance for the Green Bay Packers Sunday in the pre-game and halftime shows of the Packer-San Diego Chargers’ game. The halftime show will be televised nation-wide over the NBC network.
The smart 100-member band will present its halftime show to the themes of “The Sound of Music.” Richard Alnes, music supervisor of the Medford area school district, and Henry E. Clark, marching and maneuvering instructor, have worked out formation and musical arrangements characteristic of America over the past 100 years. The show will be timely in that Medford is observing its centennial year.

November 24, 1949 Three Escapees Captured In Taylor County Two County Men Held for Aiding Marathon Prisoners
Three prisoners who broke out of the Marathon county jail at Wausau Sunday morning were back in the bailiwick early the following morning, and two Taylor county men are being held for harboring the escapees.
Taken into custody on the charge of aiding prisoners in escaping from an officer were Jim Glende and Wallace Strassburger, in whose shack the fugitives were found. The dwelling is located a quarter mile west of the Sportsman’s tavern in the town of Medford.
100 Years Ago November 20, 1924 Farmers Ask Different Phone Service to Farms
Farmers northeast of Medford have asked for better phone service between their farms and Medford. A petition, signed by a number of them is being investigated by the Wisconsin Railroad Commission. If the facts warrant a hearing the commission will name a date later for a hearing on the subject.

November 18, 1899 Art Display
On Thanksgiving Day and the day following there will be held in the city an exhibit of several reproductions of the world’s famous paintings and sculpture.
Mr. Thomas has just concluded arrangements with I. E. Burt & Co. of Minneapolis Art dealers, to give one of their exhibits here for the purpose of procuring for the school some desirable works of art for the walls of the rooms and for the educational benefit to be derived from the show.
