Grunwald gets highly-sought local buck during youth hunt.

A buck of a lifetime finally met his match on Sunday, Oct. 12 with a hunter that hopefully has a lifetime yet to hunt.

In the last hour of Wisconsin’s youth deer hunt, 12year-old Emett Grunwald, the son of Mike and Janie Grunwald of Medford, had the buck several hunters had been chasing along the outskirts of the city in his sights. With one shot, he took down the trophy buck only to watch it suddenly vanish without leaving any sign.

But a day later, his dad took one more look around his parents’ property, found the buck and assured his son of being a local hunting celebrity, at least for a little while.

A local businesswoman will join the US Capitol Christmas tree on its journey from Wisconsin to Washington D.C. Mary Williams, a Medford restaurant owner, will represent the state Resource Conservation and Development group at the national tree lighting ceremony to be held on Dec. 9.

50 Years Ago November 14, 1974 County Board To Complete Session in Setting Budget

The Taylor county board of supervisors began its fall session Tuesday, continuing Wednesday and going into its final day today, Thursday, when the public budget hearing will be held at 1:30 p.m. Considered will be anticipated spending which will require a tax levy of $746,928, exceeding last year’s levy by about $84,000 and not including any resolutions requiring appropriations not already included in the proposed budget.

November 17, 1949 Hunter Ready For Deer Season Opening Nov. 19 Antlerless Deer Legal Prey; Warden Urges Precaution Wisconsin’s antlerless deer season, during which legal prey will be does, fawns, and bucks with a fork-horn not to exceed two inches, will get underway one half hour before sunrise Saturday morning, Nov. 19, and will be concluded at sunset Wednesday, Nov. 23 Taylor county hunters have been busily engaged the past week or two in making preparations for their trek into the woods in quest of the fleet footed white-tails.

100 Years Ago November 13, 1924 Long Wins 1st Place in Butter Scoring Contest

Al Long, Buttermaker at the Medford Co-operative Creamery won first place in the butter-scoring contest held at the creamery here yesterday afternoon.

Judges were Wm. Totman and Mr. Bizer, of the Dairy Dept. at Madison. Their decision on the butter was: Al Long, Medford, 1st, score 93 Al Lindow, Rib Lake Co-op. Creamery, and Paul Peterson, Prentice Co-op Creamery tie for 2nd, 92.

November 11, 1899 At Dorchester

There are any number of good people at Dorchester and if we did not meet them all it was not our fault. As a matter of course, we called at the New Era office and found the two Roys— Prosser and Taylor—head over heels in business but willing to quit work for three minutes to talk “shop” with the Medford printers.
