A longtime Medford area business has announced plans to close at the end of 2024.

On October 30, Jon Bauer, president of J. Bauer Trucking, filed a notice of business closing with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and to town of Medford chairman Stanley Schmidt. The closure will impact 64 total employees.

Sue Emmerich of the Medford Area Development Foundation said the foundation is working with its business partners to identify opportunities for the workers who will be displaced by the closure.

The most recent unemployment rates for the area, list Taylor County as having 2.3% unemployment. This is below the state average of 2.5% and the national average of 3.9%.

State and federal laws require businesses with more than 50 employees file with the state and local officials 60 days in advance of a planned business or plant closure.

In the letter, Bauer states: “Please be advised that on December 31, 2024, J. Bauer Trucking, Inc. (the “Company”) will be permanently terminating its transport business located at W5141 State Highway 64, Medford, WI 54451. This action is elected to result in the permanent elimination of 64 employees - 6 salary and 58 hourly or per mile positions. The company expects to begin eliminating portion on December 31, 2024, and that the last day of employment for employees will and complete close of the transportation business will be December 31, 2024.”

The letter lists the president, one supervisor, three dispatchers, seven clerical workers, a trainer, 10 mechanics and maintenance, and 41 drivers who will be impacted by the business closure.

J. Bauer Trucking was founded in 1973 and provides over-the-road trucking services to customers regionally in the upper midwest with routes in 47 states.
