up Teamwork,

On Monday night members of Little Whispers 4H Club held a grilled cheese contest. Community judges Rob Klussendorf, Dicke Wesle and Brian Wilson had the challenging task of choosing which team had the best grilled cheese.

Youth were divided into eight groups. There was a selection of ingredients for the members to choose from. The teams also received bonus points if they incorporated the surprise ingredients into their final sandwich. This year's surprise ingredients were gouda cheese, zucchini, and cranberries. Each team was given 5 minutes to review the ingredients. They then had 25 minutes to collect the ingredients and make their sandwiches. While qualities like taste, texture, appearance and uniqueness of ingredients were on the judging criteria, the groups were also judged on station cleanliness, teamwork, cooperation and the leadership demonstrated by the older club members who were split between the groups.

Judges sampled the creations and while some were definitely creative combinations the judges were surprised at how well some of the unusual combinations worked together. Some entries went with a more dessert theme incorporating things like peanut butter, chocolate, apples, marshmallows and bananas with the cheese in what would be at home in a pudgy pie around a campfire, others went more traditional routes or incorporated cooked eggs into more savory breakfast treats.

The winners received their choice of candy and bragging rights for having the best grilled cheese, while learning skills like teamwork, planning and time management.
