October 28, 1899 Cent Apiece for Dewey

This Paper Will Co-operate With the Children in Raising the Dewey Watch Fund The Star and News has entered into an arrangement with The Minneapolis Journal whereby the children of the place may more conveniently contribute to the Dewey Watch Fund.

The Minneapolis paper, in response to a request from the children, has agreed to receive one-cent subscriptions towards a fund to buy Admiral Dewey a watch.

100 Years Ago October 30, 1924 Medford Now Stands Fourth in Conference

Medford High School now stands fourth in the Wisconsin Valley High School Football Conference.

None of the ten teams has a clear record; though Wausau and Stevens Point have not been beaten, they have tied—Wausau twice. Merill also stands above Medford; she has lost one game but has won three.

November 3, 1949 H.S. Tuition Shares Apportioned Towns Amount Will Be Placed on Tax Rolls For Collection

Apportionment of high school tuition changes in the total amount of $111,670.81 has been completed by the office of Harold Ruesch, county clerk, and notices of amounts due have been forwarded to the clerk of each town or village. The amount represents the tuition charges of 16 high schools attended by students who are residents of the county. The charges were approved by the county school committee.

Directors and staff member of The Sandbox, a new Medford day care center for children of working mothers, were hostesses Sunday evening at an open house. The center, accepting children from 2 1/2 to 6 years of age, is located at the corner of Park Ave. and Cedar St.

The annual Jaycee Haunted House was as thrilling as ever this year, with a record crowd of over 500 spectators. For the price of a can of food and a ticket, children of all ages got their wits scared out of them — safely — in the spooky haunted house. The theme of the event was “Take the Rustic Road to the Haunted House.”

April ballot will include referendum to allow up to a $1 million levy increase.

Cuts are coming for Taylor County’s budget, the question of how deep those cuts will be will be in the hands of county voters.
