October 21, 1899 The Foot Ball Game 125 Years Ago The Great American Game is Played Here for the First Time Saturday was an ideal day for foot ball. The air was invigorating, the ground in perfect condition. The crowd that assembled to witness the Colby Medford High-school game was not as large as it should have been, but considering the fact that it was the first game, and so few were acquainted with it, the attendance was good.

100 Years Ago

Anton Mikuleneak of Goodrich was killed Tuesday night in an accident which it is believed was the direct result of his being full of moonshine whiskey. His body was discovered Tuesday morning at 6:45 by Tom Reinhardt in the ditch at the edge of the Athens road a mile southeast of Goodrich. Mr. Reinhart was on his way to work at Goodrich. He called A.C. Emmons, whose land borders the road there, and Mr. Emmons at once phoned to Sheriff Frank Bauer and Coroner T.C. Hartwig.

October 27, 1949 Achievement Day To Honor 4-H Members Awards Will Be Made For Accomplishments; Program at Avon

The county extension office announced this week that plans had now been completed for the 4-H Achievement Day program at which time 4-H club members will receive awards for accomplishments of the club yera. The program will be held Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Avon theatre in Medford, starting at the 10 a.m. The meeting is for all 4-H club members and their parents.

October 24, 1974 Youths Invited To Halloween 50 Years Ago Party October 31

A Halloween masquerade dance and party for junior and high school students will be sponsored at Medford Municipal auditorium Halloween night, Oct. 31, by the Klossner-Dietzler Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary. Cooperating will be members of the student council and other local organizations.

The Carnaby Street Band, Eau Claire, will provide music for dancing free of charge and tradition Halloween games will be arranged. Pop and barbecue sandwiches will be sold. All area youths from seventh through twelfth grades are invited to attend.

October 27, 1999 25 Years Ago With the retirement of Editor Don Woerpel this week after 15 years at the helm of The Star News, several staff changes have been made.

Laurie Meyer, who has been associate editor for the past several years, has been named editor, while Brian Wilson has been named associate editor. In addition, Matt Frey has been named sports editor, a position formerly held by Brian Wilson.

10 Years Ago October 23, 2014 Humane society seeks help in dealing with cats

Volunteers and staff with the Taylor County Humane Society are facing a massive clean up operation this week in dealing with an influx of more than 60 cats and two dogs following the death of their owner.
