October 9, 2014 Never Forgotten

Star News Editor Brian Wilson accompanied the Oct. 6 Never Forgotten Honor Flight. The flight took nearly 100 veterans from Central Wisconsin to Washington D.C. to visit the monuments and be recognized for their service. Several area veterans and their guardians were on the trip.

25 Years Ago October 13, 1999 Raider doubles team headed for state

For the second straight fall, the Medford Red Raiders are sending a doubles team to the WIAA Division 2 state girls tennis meet in Madison.

Seniors Annie Werner and Nicole Staab (14-4) are this year’s qualifiers after they reached the sectional finals in number-one doubles last week. They didn’t win the sectional title, but just getting to the finals was more than enough for the to qualify for state.

50 Years Ago October 10, 1974 ‘Protect Your Child From Stranger’ Week Being Observed Here

The week of October 6 through 12 is proclaimed “Protect Your Child from Strangers Week” and Jaycettes throughout the state are launching campaigns to educate children on the rules of self protection and the dangers of the friendly stranger.

October 13, 1949 Wind Lashes County; Damage Report High Storm, General in State, Strikes Monday With Heavy Rain

After threatening during the morning hours, a wind reported traveling at a velocity of 60 miles an hour in the area, struck Taylor county at noon Monday and left thousands of dollars in property damage before it subsided during the early evening hours.

For several hours during the morning the wind traveled at a high speed, and heavy black clouds kept forming and breaking away. At about noon the full weight of the wind struck, and propelled a rain cloudburst in front fo it. The rain did not continue long, but the wind never faded from its terrific pace until in the evening.

100 Years Ago October 9, 1924 Medford Plays Friday Against Marshfield High

Medford High School’s football team plays Marshfield at Marshfield Friday, Oct. 10th, instead of Saturday as originally planned.

A large party of fans is planning on driving down to see the boys play, as it is a known fact that Medford would rather win from Marshfield than from any other city in the state. There has always been a keen friendly rivalry between the teams of Marshfield and Medford in all branches of sport.

October 7, 1899 Farmers’ Meeting

Those who contributed products to the Taylor county display at the state Fair are requested to meet at the city hall, city of Medford, at 9 o’clock on Saturday morning, October 14th, for the purpose of deciding on the distribution of the prize money received at the fair.
