July 29, 1899

The lawn party given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thaxter Shaw last Wednesday was a thorough success. The evening was perfect, the attendance was large, and all enjoyed themselves heartily. The occasion had been much less enjoyable without the excellent music rendered by the Medford Citizens Band.

July 31, 1924 Hirst Will Speak In Medford Tuesday, 5th At Two In Afternoon A. R. Hirst, candidate against Gov. John J. Blaine for the Republican nomination for governor at the September primary, will speak at Medford Tuesday afternoon, August 5th, at two o’clock.

Mr. Hirst made a trip into north Wisconsin earlier in the campaign and visited most of the larger places in a circle around Taylor County, so is making a trip to touch the county seats missed on the earlier swing.

July 28, 1949 Select Girls To Attend State Dress Revue Record Entry List Competes In County Contest

From a total of 151 entries, two girls were selected Tuesday afternoon to represent Taylor county in the Dress Revue competition at the state fair. The county contest, whose entry list established a new record, was held at the Avon theatre under the supervision of Mrs. Claire Abrahamson, county home agent.

Selected as state winner were Alice Mathey, member of the Busy Workers 4-H club of the town of Browning, and Margaret Holtz, Happy Farmer 4-H club member from the town of Little Black. Miss Mathey will model a black suit for active sport wear, and Miss Holtz will model a wash dress or suit for school and sport.

August 1, 1974 Vandals Uproot 15 Decorative Trees In City Sidewalks

City police quickly apprehended four individuals, after 15 arbor vitae shrubs which had been planted in specially constructed sidewalk apertures for the city’s recent centennial celebration, were jerked out and thrown on the sidewalks or streets early Tuesday morning.

25 Years Ago July 28, 1999 County residents under age 75 the healthiest in state

Taylor County residents might not be getting as rich as residents of some other Wisconsin counties, but they’re living longer. According to a countyby- county “health checkup” released last week by state officials and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Taylor County has the lowest mortality rate of all 72 counties in the sate with 261 deaths per 100,000 for persons under age 75. That compares to 890.9 deaths per 100,000 in Menominee County which has the state’s highest mortality rate.

July 31, 2014 Donation boosts hospital foundation

It was a party Frank A. Goodrich Jr. would have loved. The shrimp cocktail was succulent and tasty, and the cake was loaded with poppy seeds. Members of Goodrich’s family and Aspirus Medford Foundation enjoyed a party in his honor on Saturday morning as his gift to the foundation was presented. The Goodrich estate presented $250,000 to the foundation. The gift is the single largest ever presented to the foundation.
