A Taylor County Deputy Sheriff is in the hospital and the man who shot him is behind bars with a $1 million cash bond awaiting formal charges from the district attorney’s office.
On Sunday evening, Deputy Chad Kowalczyk, a five year veteran of the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department and member of the county’s SWAT team, was attempting to make contact with Alexander Schneider, 27, Westboro, as a result of a reported violation of a courtordered injunction.
Instead, Schneider is alleged to have started shooting at Kowalczyk. According to Taylor County Sheriff Bruce Daniels, Kowalczyk was able to contact Taylor County Dispatch and report he was injured.

With efforts to have weather warning sirens installed at campgrounds in the Chequamegon Forest apparently at a “dead end” because of a lack of funds, Taylor County Emergency Management is not trying to get Plan “B” in place - a radio transmitter in the Town of Hammel that would get Taylor County on the NOAA weather net.
Plan “B,” however, is going to need help from our state legislators if it’s ever going to see the light of day.

Plan are well underway for the big event of the year in Medford, “Mink Festival USA.” Committees have been working during the year to prepare for this year’s festival and the office was scheduled to open yesterday, Wednesday, at the Weather Shield building located on North Main Street. Mrs. Nick Doriot, executive secretary for the Medford Area Chamber and Mrs. Emil Falasky, Mink Festival coordinator, will be in charge of the same.

The Hansen Glove company, whose main offices and plant are located in Milwaukee, has evidenced an interest in establishing a plant in Rib Lake, but a final decision will not be reached for two weeks according to Henry Schlais, president of the Rib Lake Commercial club.
100 years ago September 13, 1923
The Taylor County Fair, which closed Friday after an afternoon of rain, had the biggest receipts of any fair in the history of the association, in spite of the weather man. Rain threatened Thursday and carried out the threat Friday afternoon.
The receipts of the fair were $2,658.71 of which about three-fifths came in Thursday.
125 years ago
Peter J. Olsen, favored the hungry editor of the Star and News with a fine large pumpkin, a water melon and musk melon all grown on his farm in the town of Holway yesterday forenoon.
Mrs. Winchester and son Roy, Mrs. Phelan and daughter Cleo, of Phillips, stopped over here last Monday on their way to Hillside, near Madison, where the two young people will attend school.
Marius T. Andresen went to Milwaukee last Sunday to rejoin his regiment, which was then on its way home from Porto Rico. He was later ordered to report at Camp Douglas where the 2nd regiment will be mustered out.
