The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program has recognized eight members of the Medford Area Senior High class of 2012 with AP Scholar Awards for their exceptional achievement on the spring exams. Max Bernklau and Tara Buehler were named AP Scholars with Distinction by averaging an overall score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of three or higher on five or more of these exams. Patricia Ekwueme and Olivia Erl were named AP Scholars with Honor for averaging at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of three or higher on four or more of the exams. Hailey Brost, Hannah Grunewald, Jeremiah Kakes and Michael Prihoda were named AP Scholars for completing three or more exams with scores of three or higher.

The Taylor County Historical Society will host a Michaelis Mansion Show and Share session this Thursday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. The event will be held at the museum in the Multi-purpose building at the fairgrounds in Medford. The Michaelis place is the spectacular mansion built in Medford in the 1880s as a wooded retreat for Chicago newspaperman Richard Michaelis and his wife Clara.

October 26, 1972

A Medford area “first” in veterinary medicine, Miss Betty Danen, Stetsonville, has joined the staff of the Medford Veterinary Clinic as veterinary medical technician. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Danen, Stetsonville, Miss Danen graduated in September as a veterinary medical technician from the Medical Institute of Minnesota, Minneapolis. She joins the local staff this month.

75 YEARS AGO

October 30, 1947

Final preparations were made this week for the annual Achievement Day program for 4-H clubs of the county which will be held tonight, Thursday, October 30, in the assembly room of the Medford high school beginning at 8 o’clock. Awards and recognition will be given clubs, club members and leaders for their accomplishments during the project year.

100 YEARS AGO

October 26, 1922

Medford won from Abbotsford High School in the football game at Abbotsford Friday, 21 to 0. Abbotsford has improved considerably since the game a week previous, both offensively and defensively. Medford scored three touchdowns in the first period and was held scoreless throughout the rest of the game. Medford played Abbotsford off their feet during the first period.

125 YEARS AGO

October 30, 1897

The people of Rib Lake were surprised to hear the fire whistle, and soon found out that the saw mill of J. J. Kennedy was on fire. The boys worked hard to save the mill and at one time it looked as though they would succeed until a steam pipe burst and started it again. The surrounding buildings caught fire a number of times, but were put out in time to save the property.
