When it comes to getting things done, on one side you have what people want, and on the other you have what there is money to do. Rustic Road No. 1 in Taylor County falls somewhere in the middle, and that is not good enough for some residents who are demanding the county do more to fix the long-term problems of the road. The county received a petition calling for improvements to the road, and at Tuesday’s county board meeting, heard from property owner Pat Seidel with concerns about how the road has been maintained.

Broadway Ave. a.k.a. Hwy 64, will be closing at the end of this month as the construction season begins. The project is expected to begin May 1 and will go throughout most of the summer on a “tight” work schedule, according to City Administrator, Richard Johnston. Access for residents will be “hard”, Johnston said, but the city is “going to try and be flexible.”

Daryl D. Wendt was elected president of the Medford Lions Club at the annual meeting Wednesday, April 12, the new club head succeeding James Gies. Named to serve with Wendt were Tracy Radosevich, first vice president; Dr. J. N. Dougherty, second vice president; Ron Isaacson, third vice president; Foster Freiberg, secretary; Emil Falasky, treasurer; Arthur Franz, lion tamer; Gary Quammen, tail twister, directors Oscar Frey, Richard Zuleger, Don Fuchs and James Gies. Officers will be installed May 24 and will assume their posts June 28.

At their recent semi-annual meeting, members of the Sheldon Co-operative Services decided to remodel their store building in Sheldon, the financing to be entirely by sale of capital stock. Clarence Wegner, secretary of the Co-op, revealed that monthly sales for the last six months showed an increase of $7,800 over the average sales of the preceeding six month period.

Adeline Anderson won first place in the Taylor County school contest and has thereby become Taylor County’s entrant in the Wisconsin State contest. The state contest will be participated in by pupils from the various counties and will take place at the state fair next fall. The Chelsea girl will be entertained for two days at the West Allis state fair grounds, Milwaukee.

April 24, 1897
Mrs. H. J. Thompsen of Little Black Taylor county, who has since the death of her husband been visiting in this city with her daughter, Mrs. H. G. McCrossen, will return to her Taylor County home next Wednesday. Her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Will Thompson will break up house keeping in this city for the summer and will move with her children to Little Black. Mr. Thompson works for Limpman & Slimmer as a lumber grader, and as he is away from home nearly all the time, his family will see as much of him if they live at Little Black, as they would if they remained in Wausau.
