A few hiccups don’t keep Hornets from getting wins
By Ginna Young A trio of games for the Cadott softball program over the week, saw them take two out of three games against some touch competition.
April 8 vs. Cameron non-conference (W 6-4) Cadott was on the road to begin the week, facing off with Cameron, struggling early on, before turning the game around.
“We were down 3-0 the majority of the game and were able to come back the last two innings,” said coach Lexie Rothbauer. “Kennedy Nerdrum had an excellent start pitching for us and Kasey Moldrem came in to clutch the win.”
The Hornets were able to get ahold of the ball with their bats all innings and secured some hits when they needed them, taking a 6-4 win over Cameron.
Junior Kennedy Nerdrum went three innings, giving up 7 hits and 3 runs, while walking 2 batters and striking out 3. Senior Kasey Moldrem was on the mound for four innings, allowing 2 hits, a run, a walk and punching out 8 batters.
Offensively, Moldrem, Nerdrum and junior Josie Roth came away with 2 hits each, while seniors Tarynn Donahue and Rilei Weeks, and junior Abi Bowe all added a hit.
April 10 vs. Thorp conference (L 11-7) A couple days later, the Hornets hosted Thorp, where Weeks and Moldrem each hit home runs in the conference match-up, but it wasn’t enough and the Cardinals took the win, 11-7.
“We held it together for the majority of the game, but had an inning with a few hiccups that cost us the game,” said Rothbauer.
Moldrem went all seven innings in the bout, giving up 12 hits, 11 runs and 5 walks, while striking out 8.
On the offensive side, Weeks had 3 hits, with Moldrem and sophomore Ava Eiler adding 2 hits each, and Nerdrum, Donahue and junior Lexi Bremness each chipping in with a hit.
April 11 vs. Owen-Withee conference (W 16-1) The next day, Cadott saw Owen-Withee come to town, in what proved to be no contest for the Hornets. Owen-Withee struck first, scoring their lone run in the opening inning, but from then on, it was all Cadott.
Cadott knocked in four runs in the first inning, followed by six in each of the next two innings, to claim a 16-1 victory.
“We were able to get a lot of bats on the ball tonight,” said Rothbauer. “As a team, we had 10 hits and five stolen bases.”
Moldrem was again on the mound for the Hornets, allowing just 3 hits and a run, while striking out 6.
Coming up with 2 hits, were Donahue, Weeks and Bremness, while Moldrem, Nerdrum, Bowe and sophomore Kaylee Reineke all had a hit.
