Edgar track seeks to replicate success

By Casey Krautkramer
It’s remarkable that the Edgar varsity boys track and field team took third place at the WIAA Division 3 state championships last season, considering they only competed in four events. The Wildcats were just efficient in their state events. Edgar alumni Greg Streit is in the midst of his 13th season as Edgar’s boys and girls varsity track head coach and he’s hoping his school’s student athletes enjoy more success this spring.
Edgar’s varsity assistant track coaches this season are Andrew Lukasko, Mandy Streit, Nathan Dahl, Tom Normington, Adam Decker, Jon Streit and Juan Martinez.
This season’s Edgar boys track and field squad has six seniors including Corey Koeppl, shot put and discus; Eli Slack, pole vault, sprints and relays; Zander Chenier, shot put and discus; Austin Schreiber, pole vault, sprints and relays; Ty Schnelle, sprints, relays and jumps and Colby Schwoerer.
There are eight junior boys on this year’s team including Tucker Streit, hurdles, relays and jumps; Maverick Butt, hurdles, relays and jumps; Dawson Bornheimer, sprints, relays and jumps; Cade Koch, distance; Wade Kohl, shot put and discus; Dominic Contreras, sprints, relays and jumps; Dillan Sondelski, distance and Jarvis Kofent, distance.
The sophomore class has the largest number, 11, of boys on Edgar’s track and field team this season including Carson Nowak, sprints, relays and jumps; Isaiah Kraft, middle distance and jump; Owen Kingsley, shot put and discus, Anthony Trawicki, hurdles, relays and jumps; Tyler Schmidt, distance and pole vault; Caius Higgins, middle distance and pole vault; Kaden Bargender, sprints, relays and jumps; Izach Myszka, sprints, relays and jumps; Kennen Van Ornum, sprints, relays and jumps; Wyatt Klockziem, shot put and discus and Isaac Socha, distance.
There are seven freshmen boys on the Wildcats track and field squad this spring including Eli Tessa, sprints, relays and jumps; Emmitt Van Ornum, distance; Konnor Schilling, sprints and pole vault; Landon Lukasko, hurdles, relays and jumps; Trent Murkowski, distance and high jump; Mason Manecke, sprints, relays and jumps and Brendan Imhoff, sprints, relays and jumps.
Last season, the Edgar boys 4x400-meter relay finished the season as WIAA Division 3 state champions while going undefeated in outdoor meets. The 4x400meter relay included Tucker Streit and Kohlbe Weisenberger who graduated high school last spring along with Ty Schnelle and Tucker Streit who return this season. The 4x400-meter relay also broke the school record at state by finishing the race in 3:25.44.
These same four boys were on the 4x200-meter relay that took second place at state while breaking the school record with a finish in 1:30.26 for second place. Teegan Streit and Kohlbe Weisenberger were also key members of Edgar’s 4x100meter relay that placed fifth at state last season. Ty Schnelle and Austin Schreiber were members of the 4x100-meter relay team and they return this season.
Greg Streit explains the key to Edgar’s boys relay teams being able to replace key members Teegan Streit and Weisenberger this season.
“The key is to have the correct mindset when it comes to what we want to accomplish,” he said. “We had a couple of great kids graduate, Teegan and Kohlbe, two of the fastest guys ever in Edgar. It was a great ride with the four guys from last year and one to be extremely proud of, but the mindset is always, who’s next? We have two returners from last year’s state championship 4x4 team, Ty and Tucker, who have gotten much faster than they were

last year. We are looking for two more guys who want to run on the squad. Right now we have about four guys competing for the last two spots. We will enjoy the competition and work extremely hard to get better every day.”
Greg Streit is not worried about the Stratford boys track and field team winning the last three Marawood Conference championships, or that the Tigers beat the Wildcats by only two points at state last season to finish runner-up. The Edgar boys won the Marawood Conference title in 2021.
“We are going to concern ourselves with ourselves,” he said. “We will continue to improve each day. You don’t control others in this sport. You control what you can do and see how you can improve. I have been extremely happy with how our distance crew has been doing as well as our triple jumpers and hurdlers. We have an excellent group of great seniors in Ty Schnelle, Austin Schreiber, Corey Koeppl, Colby Schwoerer, Eli Slack and Zander Chenier. We will do everything in our power to make sure these guys have the best senior year possible. They are all extremely hard-working, humble kids who are a joy to coach and be around.”
Edgar’s boys track and field team had a great indoor season this spring by winning the UW-La Crosse Invite on March 22 and the Merrill meet on April 3. The Wildcats boy and girls teams begin their outdoor season at the Marathon meet at 4:30 p.m. this Thursday, April 17, followed by their annual home Doc Schulz Invite at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22.
Edgar girls preview Addisyn Trawicki and Mia Stencil are the only two senior girls on the Edgar varsity track and field team this season. They both compete in the sprints, relays and jumps. There are also only two junior girls, Kaitlynn Hartnady and Sam Schmidt, on the varsity squad this season. Hartnady competes in the hurdles, relays and jumps while Schmidt is injured.
Much like the boys team, the sophomore class leads the way for the girls team with eight competitors. Junior girls on the squad this season are Samantha Schneider, distance; Rachel Burke, sprints, relays and jumps; Makita Ellenbecker, shot put and discus; Naquene Ellenbecker, shot put and discus; Paola Corcovado, distance; Paula Dreier, distance; Abigail Christiansen, sprints, relays and jumps and Grace Hargraves, shot put and discus.
There are four freshmen girls on the team this season including Adeline Peterson, middle distance and pole vault; Shiloh Karlen, sprints, relays and jumps; Paige Reinders, distance and Ashley Krause, distance.
Edgar lost Kyra Anderson, who placed ninth in the discus at state last season, to graduation. The Edgar girls 4x100-meter relay placed eighth at state last year and the 4x200-meter relay placed 13th at state last season with members Brooke Imhoff and Malaina Koehler, who both graduated last spring, along with Trawicki and Burke who both return this season. Burke placed 15th in the triple jump at state as only a freshman last season.
Edgar’s girls track and field team last won the Marawood Conference championships in back-to-back seasons in 2018 and 2019. Greg Streit explains how the Edgar girls can continue to improve this season.
“For our girls, we need to continually improve physically and mentally,” he said. “We are working to get better each day and are excited for what the future holds. We have two senior girls who are excellent leaders on the track and in the classroom in Addisyn Trawicki and Mia Stencil. These two are great kids who will be highly successful in life, and I wish them nothing but the best possible senior season for them. We also have a very talented younger girls crew led by freshman Shiloh Karlen who will look to compete in a lot of big races for us.”
