The Medford Raiders took two of the three doubles matches, but a sweep of the singles matches lifted the Marshfield Tigers to a 5-2 win in non-conference boys tennis Tuesday afternoon.
Medford head coach Kyle Ranum paired senior Cale Schulz and sophomore Blaine Searles in the top doubles flight and they put together a solid effort, defeating Marshfield’s Rahul Dissenyake and Kevin Buth 6-1, 6-4.
Additions to the team this year, Cash Thums and Axl Spanbauer went the distance at number-three doubles, winning a 10-point match tiebreaker 10-8 over Dhaarin Patel and Cohen Boyack. Patel and Boyack won the first set 6-4, but Thums and Spanbauer took the second set 6-4 to force the tiebreaker.
Marshfield, however, won the other five matches in straight sets in its first meet of the new season.
In singles, Kai Rens was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Medford’s Mason Reimann in flight one. Antonio Koehn defeated Parker Hill 6-3, 6-0 in flight two and Beckett Hall swept Ethan Kollmansberger in the number-three match 6-0, 6-0. At numberfour singles, Levi Janssen was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Raider Jaeden Brandner.
Justin Franks and Parker Kundinger beat Medford’s Cole Zenner and Christian Preuss 6-4, 6-2 at number-two doubles.
Medford, now 0-3-1, is at Wausau East today, Thursday, for a 4 p.m. dual meet with the Lumberjacks. The Raiders are at the Amery Quad Saturday before opening Great Northern Conference play Tuesday at Lakeland at 4:30 p.m. The Altoona Quad follows on April 17.

After one week of practice, Medford mixed and matched lineups while getting in three dual meets at Saturday’s seasonopening Baldwin-Woodville Quad.
The Raiders’ best showing came against the home team where they earned a 3-3 tie with the Blackhawks as there was no flightfour singles match.
Medford got all three of its wins in doubles play. Schulz and Hill went to a 10point match tiebreaker in flight one and 10 points wasn’t enough to settle their match with Jerome Deitzman and Siraj Whirry. Schulz and Hill won the first set 6-4, lost the second 6-1 and then won the tiebreaker 11-9.
Searles and Preuss took the number-two match 6-1, 6-4 over the Blackhawks’ Cole Letter and Merrick Paulson. Kollmansberger and Spanbauer won the number-three match 6-1, 6-4 over Mason Heebink and Mason Mellon.
In singles play, Thums took the numberthree match to a tiebreaker, but Baldwin-Woodville’s Rhett Carlson won it 6-3, 2-6, 10-2. Benson Campbell beat Reimann 6-1, 6-2 in flight one and William Eggink beat Cole Zenner 6-0, 6-0 in flight two.
Osceola, who went 3-0 in the quad, beat Medford 5-2 in their matchup.
Reimann and Searles went way beyond 10 points to finally win their match tiebreaker at number-one doubles. After dropping the first set 6-4 to Osceola’s Andre Valbuena and Bradley Ramsey, Reimann and Searles evened the match by winning the second set 6-2. They outlasted the Chieftain duo 16-14 in the tiebreaker to win the match.
Hill was Medford’s lone singles winner. He beat Chase Almlie in flight two 6-2, 7-5.
Osceola’s Wyatt Derosier and Asher Havranek beat Thums and Spanbauer 6-3, 6-1 at number-two doubles and Carter Marincel and Isaac Vad beat Carter Zenner and Preuss 6-1, 6-3 at number-three doubles.
Mason Jordan beat Zenner 6-3, 6-0 at number-one singles, Wyatt Larson beat Kollmansberger 6-0, 6-4 at number-three and Owen Henningsgard beat Medford freshman Ethan Jones at number-four 62, 6-0.
The Raiders also faced Great Northern Conference rival Lakeland and lost 4-3 as the Thunderbirds swept the singles matches. Reimann and Searles won the top doubles match 6-4, 6-4 over Marshall Czlapinski and Jayden Shepski. Cole Zenner and Thums as well as Carter Zenner and Spanbauer took forfeits in flights two and three.
Dominic Gironella beat Schulz 6-2, 6-3 in the flight-one singles match. Jack Stepec defeated Hill 6-3, 6-3, Gage Bowe beat Kollmansberger 6-0, 6-4 and Sawyer Brown beat Preuss 6-2, 6-3.
