NASP STATE ARCHERY
Dylan Emmerich, Brock Anderson and Ezra Hillebrand of Medford as well as Colton Lang of Gilman very nearly won individual championships during this past weekend’s National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Wisconsin state championship events held at Wisconsin Dells.
Emmerich was one point shy of the boys middle school championship in the bullseye shoot as he scored 288 out of a possible 300 with his 15 shots from 10 meters and 15 shots from 15 meters. The only archer in grades 6-8 who was better was Stanley-Boyd’s Beau Ducommun, who got a score of 289. Gilman’s Wyatt Stephens wasn’t far off, placing fifth out of 381 archers in the division with a score of 285. Lang was 12th at 277. Emmerich is a seventh grader, Stephens and Lang are eighth graders.
In the 3-D championship, where archers take five shots at six different targets that vary in distance from 10 to 15 meters, Anderson scored 287 points and Hillebrand scored 286 in the high school boys division. That put them in second and third place just behind Wyatt Emmerich of Columbus High School, who shot a 288. Gilman’s Terran Schleis was 14th out of 114 boys in the division with his score of 276. Anderson is a freshman and Hillebrand is a junior. Schleis is a sophomore.
In the middle school boys division, Lang placed second out of 129 archers with his score of 279. He wound up three points behind champion Dane Laufenberg of Columbus. Wyllow Freudenthal, a Holy Rosary fifth grader, was a second-place finisher for Medford in the elementary division (grades 4-5) of the bullseye shoot. She earned a score of 277. The only archer of 109 that was better was Gabrielle Trava of Columbus, who shot a 285 and also won the 3-D title with a score of 284. Freudenthal was fourth there with a 256.
Other high scores for local archers in the bullseye shoot included Gilman’s Ava Webster (285), Shyan Pentimone (284) and Reece Weir (281), who were fourth, sixth and 16th out of 331 high school girls; Hillebrand (288) and Anderson (284), who were fifth and 17th out of 304 high school boys, and Gilman’s Kaysen Westaby, who was seventh out of 141 elementary boys.
